Drug runners and Cessnas

The mighty Steingar is appeased.

I have found more veterans of the US armed forces represented in the pilot community than any other group to which I have been exposed. This is a group of Americans who literally put their well being on the line for their country. Yet the government treats them like criminals vis-a-vis their treatment of Airmen. TFRs for political bigwigs. TFRs for stadia. Flight restrictions for Washington. Permission needed to leave the country. The fact that these limitations, which improve security for no one except those charged with enforcing them (in this case, job security) affect a group enriched for veterans of the armed forces, is in my opinion a crowning irony, and a shameful injustice.

I agree that Home land security has over stepped its intended purpose, but
You must remember that every segment of our society has it 2% that break the law. I've even seen returning troops try to bring live ordnance home from the battle field. and drugs. Keep in mind they are people subject to make all the mistakes.

I don't doubt your wisdom. But none of the security theatre hastily put in place after 911 makes anyone any safer, especially the stuff relevant to Airmen.

The stuff in place for G.A. is intended to prevent another January 5.

Agreed 100%. also thank you for clearing up what you meant in the corelation of vets to pilots etc...
We Americans are so used to living in a relatively safe society that we don't realize what other humans live with day to day in other areas of the planet. 9/11 made us realize, like it or not, that we are as vulnerable to attack here as anybody else anywhere else. Granted, it takes significant effort to find exploitable weaknesses, but nothing is impossible and 9/11 served as our wake-up call IMHO that we are no different so long as we are in the crosshairs of a bunch of lunatics who know how to infiltrate, blend, and undermine.
TSA and HS are a "warm and fuzzy" response. There is probably some good that has come out of their formation, but I dont personally believe they are worth the hassle. A focused and patient opponent will, given time, be able find exploitable weaknesses elsewhere. It could be ANYWHERE, aviation related or not, and if/when it were to happen again (I hope it NEVER does), my guess is it would be just as rude, but that is why it is terrorism. It is cowardice flat out, but it worked...TSA and HS are proof of that.

See, I don't see it like that. You'll notice that Homeland Security was created, supposedly, for anti-terror... but is now- I'm shocked!- being used to fight that mightiest of Wars... the War on Drugs.
HS and TSA are little more than a naked power grab designed to spy on citizens. As Ted has experienced, "probable cause" now means "doing anything other than sitting around your house getting fatter." And he's a citizen flying a US-registered plane!
All of this crap because people want to smoke pot. Democrats want to find new revenue sources, Republicans want to cut spending... do both by legalizing that garbage and letting those morons who want it so badly pay the government $40 for a pack of joints. Both sides go home happy, and the pizza industry gets a revenue boost to boot.

I remember the thread, but can't remember if this was raised:

Ted, did they have a search warrant for your plane?

Not to speak for Ted, but I read the original thread and there was no mention of a warrant. Seemed like one of those "mind if we have a look in the trunk?" kind of deals where if you say no, then everybody gets all suspicious-like. What gross behavior.
Next thing you know, you've got the kountry kops with federal police power on your airplane treating everything with the utmost disbelieving attitude.
"Sir, what are those pods for?"
"They're tip tanks. They hold fuel."
"Sure they do. Fuel for the Colombian economy!"

no disagreement here. the warm and fuzzy i was referring to is more from the perspective of typical airline passengers. im not as familiar with the effects on the G.A. community, but it is disturbing to see these agenies chasing their tails the same way the rest of them have with the drug war.

Nope, there was no search warrant. It was one of those situations where you could pretty much comply or expect to get hassled severely. Not how it should work, but how it does.

14 months and 500+ hours later, I haven't been searched again, or ever hassled. That includes 11 round-trips to Mexico and Canada.

57k?????????????/
daaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn

Do you think the Nashville Police will be able to sell it for that much?

I'd be afraid to buy a plane with a tail number that is known to have be used for drug running. The experience that John and Martha King had, with a plane that had a tail number that corresponded to a once-stolen plane, comes to mind.

can't you re-register the plane with a different tail#?

The $57k number was asking price. Who knows what it actually sold for? I don't think there's a huge demand for old 210s, so it depends on who actually bids on it. I doubt you'd get the logs unless there's a way that the seizure process can compel the owner to provide them, so there'd be a discount for that. And auctions are basically a cash deal, so anyone that would want to finance an old 210 would be out of luck.

You could always change the N number, but hopefully the new one you pick doesn't have a history, too.
