Do you park (your car) backwards?

The problem with these discussions is I bet we're all picturing different parking lots. A tight busy mall parking lot or parking garage isn't the same animal as say a small town wal-mart.

Row width, space size, traffic, what's on the other side of the space, etc are all factors. If only there was some sort of thing we could use that would let us take in the facts of a situation and do different things based on what is ideal in that scenario. Like something portable... about the size of half a cantaloupe that doesn't need batteries and can adapt to things.

I seldom back in unless there is a reason for it (like unloading something). However, I usually look for a place where I can pull out forwards - even if finding same involves parking some distance away from where I am going. I have had too many close calls with pedestrians and other cars suddenly appearing behind me to take chances with backing out.

One of my pet peeves is people who back out of driveways into traffic. If I lived in a place with no turn around I would always back in.

I like end spots, limits door ding exposure to one side only. So:

When the space is on the far side of the curbing you might be parking against, pulling in is often the easiest. If the space in on the near side, backing in is often the best.

I usually back in my Mini convertible because it's got a bad blind spot on the passenger side rear quarter. It's right where you want to look for cars coming down the row towards you when you go to back out. If the weather is nice, I'll put the top down but if not, I'd much rather pull out forward.

We were taught this in driving safety classes at work.

It's safer to back in a space that you have just witnessed is clear than backing out of a space that may have traffic or pedestrians later. Not to mention if there's a fire or other calamity, you want out of there.

Backing accidents were the #1 pain in the companies ass with a fleet of trucks.

This is why my company requires us to back in to spots or pull through. Actually, even in my personal vehicle I have started to do it since it does make it easier to get in and out.

extended cab full size 4x4 parking Tail Over Water (TOW) is sometimes the only way I fit in a lot of spots.

Home Depot/Lowes Parking Lots full of small car spots! Grrr! Oh wait, wrong thread...

Yes for a place that is geared toward home improvements and lumber it amazes me why they make the parking lot so tight. I mean majority of the vehicles in he parking lot are trucks and trucks with trailers. Walmart has a better parking lot.
