Taxi to Parking
Things you should read and know, assuming you're working on your Private:The FAR/AIM especially is a lot of information to actually study and remember
* 14 CFR Part 61: Subparts A, B (except the IFR section, 91.167-91.193), C, E.
* 14 CFR Part 91: Subparts A, B, C.
Things you should know, but you probably don't need to read the entire FAR on:
* Medical requirements (14 CFR Parts 67&68)
* 14 CFR Part 93: Special air traffic rules. Anchorage, Niagara Falls, northwest coastal Florida, Los Angeles, DC, NYC, Grand Canyon, and some other places have special flight rules. It's worth at least knowing the locations specified by the subparts so that you know to review the rules prior to flying in those areas.
Things you should be aware of their existence:
* Definitions. You'll find them in one of two places: <Part>.1, or Part 1. For example, you come across the term "Complex Airplane" in part 61. Go to 61.1 (specifically, 61.1b), and there's the definition. Or, you come across the term Administrator in many places and wonder what that means? It's right up front in 1.1. For a fun twist on this, find all three definitions of Night.

* 14 CFR Part 91 Subpart D (Special Operations)
* 49 CFR Part 830: NTSB (Reporting requirements after an accident or incident)
* 14 CFR parts 39&43: Maintenance and airworthiness details. The stuff you really need to know is in 91 Subpart E.
The AIM, PHAK, etc are more useful yet often dry and still have plenty of things you don't need to know in them. This is why there are so many third-party books available!
