Considering the definition, I've seen UFO's. I saw something, I didn't know what it was. It was far enough away, it could have been a heli, a glider, any number of aircraft. So it was unidentified.

Now, what's the real question?

I would suspect that if an alien species visited our planet, they would be competent enough to evade detection, or confident enough to make a grand entrance like "Independence Day". My money is on the second option.

I think the first thing an alien species would do upon finding Earth and humanity is level the surface of the planet with asteroids. Humans are scary dangerous.
 
Yeah, there is a difference between aliens/ufo’s existing and either one having been in our airspace before. The former is a most probable and the latter is a giant no.

Yeah, your suggestion is to ruin an entire planet by bombarding it with asteroids. Not sure scary is the S word you want to use to self reference there

Were I an alien that's the first thing I'd do. A small mass accelerated to relativistic speeds would accomplish the same goal, but would destroy the planet. An asteroid bombardment would rid the Earth of humans, along with most other species, but there would be an ability for the biota to grow back. Asteroids are plentiful in our solar system, and a species that can travel interstellar distances can probably move them easily enough. A strong possibility of why we've never seen evidence of extraterrestrial civilization is they're either hiding or bombed out of existence.
 
Aliens capable of traveling 10 light years to visit earth and then crash at Roswell.?? No.

Simple forms of life similar to a amoeba living in some aquatic corner of some planet somewhere... possibly.

But then again I used to watch Star Trek and saw Mr. Spock....

Only to our own planet at this time, unless you count random thrown objects hurtling through space. I can't wait to see the indurance claim filed by someone hit by a Tesla with an empty suit in the driver's seat.

Oh, wait. I mean the one that's out in space, not the dozen or two I see daily.

People that I trust have seen things that can’t be explained or identified at the same time that many others have. Whether or not that’s extraterrestrial life is an entirely different question.

Again there's no reason they would do that when there are plenty of other ways to accomplish getting rid of humans without destroying the rest of the planet and having to wait years for it to return to normal.

In at least one sci-fi book I’ve read the aliens just drop some chemical in the atmosphere and then return 100 years later. No humans, everything else thumbs up

Or they could just wait 100 years and see if we exterminate ourselves. Saves a trip and a load of chemicals.
 
Pretty sure a species that has cracked interstellar travel probably isn’t too scared of anything we puny humans could throw at it. We are even less scary because we can’t even band together to operate as a species.

What people NEVER talk about is the secret society of hoaxers.

I know one. He is highly intelligent and has pulled off numerous UFO hoaxes. These people have elaborate schemes.

In my own case, nearly 50 years ago I was in Los Angeles attending some Computer training. A lab session extended into evening, after which I was driving across the city after dark to where I was staying.
A light in the sky caught my attention - but I assumed that it was a police helicopter with a spotlight (a common sight around there). But then the light started to move - and it accelerated at a fantastic
rate, crossed the sky and disappeared. I said "WOW" out loud - knowing that nothing man made could do that (without a trail of fire behind it - which there was none). What was it? I have no idea. However,
I was not the only person to see it. Lots of others did, too - and it was written up in the newspaper next day. No headlines, though - just a small blurb about it.

I have seen a few other startling events - but those had explanations (like a meteorite that lit up the landscape with green light - or a night missile launch that became obvious when the second stage fired).

Why would an alien (sorry, undocumented space traveler) come here?

Any peaceful civilization so advanced that they have mastered inter-stellar space travel would necessarily have technologies that allowed them to know everything about us long before making the trip here. No need to probe anyone’s orifices.

I see no reason at all for such creatures to want to have anything to do with humanity; we offer no compelling incentive for such contact. Study our Ways to learn from us? Wisdom from “The View”, perhaps? Conflict resolution techniques from the UN?

They would likely view us with distaste. They would very likely think that they might be able to help us at some point in our distant future, if we manage to survive long enough as a human race.

At this point in our very short history, though, they would be unlikely to view us as being a worthy “project” for societal transformation through using the benefits of their advanced technologies.

In my humble opinion, our first encounter with undocumented space travelers will unfold quickly and without warning, and will be extremely unpleasant. They will be to us as we are to bacteria. They will not be peaceful. They will not be friendly. They will view us as an inconsequential nuisance to be eliminated so that they might use the Earth as a resource to be exploited for their economic benefit.

Then again, they might also view humanity as a resource to be exploited for our caloric benefit.

The ultimate example of the old adage, “careful what you wish for”.
 
I used to believe in UFOs, but once I started wearing a foil hat I could see past their cloaking technology
and properly identify them.

For those that ask why they would come here, do you not think we as a human race would make an attempt to visit somewhere that we believe life existed on? If we would try to visit another planet with life then why wouldn’t they want to visit us? Maybe we are the first or closest planet to them that they found capable of sustaining life. We don’t need to be equals from a technology standpoint just to be interesting. There are people on earth that study bugs and insects. Do we question them as to why they do that even though humans are more intelligent and technologically advanced than a grasshopper? They have their own reasons and it’s not for technological advancement. Aliens could view humans or life on earth the same way.
