Disposal of ELT Batteries

The ELT battery in the Cub had to be replaced this annual. So I now have a giant orange battery pack (BP-1010) for the Narco ELT-10, which expired in February 2019. It seems dumb to throw it in the garbage. Is there any kind of a return/refurbishment program for these things?

Some of the home improvement stores have battery and light bulb recycling bins inside the front door. Depending on type, you may be able to dump it there.
 
We take all our batteries (if not turning one in for a core charge) to a local recycling place. Just got $20 for a couple 20 year old 6VDC batteries.
 
zoom in so it's easier to hit what you are aiming for?
 
It’s a 12v battery...put jumper cables on it and carry it in the car! ;)

Seriously, I wired a plug onto one that could plug into the aux power port on my Maule to power the avionics in the event of a total electrical failure.

I actually thought it clicked with exactly what I was thinking to do with the battery, but it’s not the right thing to do...

Not only dumb, but probably illegal to.
Our local dump has an area where we can drop off batteries.
The local "Light Bulbs and More" place around here will accept them
The "Interstate Battery" store will accept them
Home Depot (around here) will accept them.

Just a few ideas; there are probably more that will help you. I save up until I get a box full and take them all to the landfill.

why not throw them in the garbage one at a time. At least they'll be distributed throughout the landfill.

That’s what I was going to do. I have such a printer, just never got around to finding components and putting a design together.
 
If you open the case aren’t the batteries just alkaline batteries?

Check your Home Depot or other recycler fine print. My experience has been most only accept “rechargeable” batteries, not alkaline.

Alkalines generally end up in the landfill, even if ceromoniously placed in the recycle bin first.
