I took advice of some here, risking my credit rating (slightly) and applied for a Discover card. I had to call them a couple times after I got the card. They are GREAT! You do have the usual press 1, press 2... where no option applies to what you need but then you get "Welcome to the Delaware/Virginia/Ohio customer service center..." followed in a very short time an actual American human who is in no hurry to get rid of you. The first sweet lady told me about when she bought her house. I got a guy who had my records at his fingertips and got me straightened out. That's the way to do it, corporate America.

I have a couple of Citi cards where I've never had some trouble but it wasn't impressive either. The similar call I made to them got me transfered as overflow to the espanol desk, but the lady was perfectly understandable.

Anyway, if you're looking for a card to get once you dump the AOPA card, get a Discover card. It looks like the rewards amount to .25 - .5% but it's better than nothing.

My dad had some identity theft issues with his discover card overseas, customer service was great and there was never a problem with getting the money back and getting a new card. Now, whenever he is overseas and my mom is also using the card back home, they call to make sure everything is legit. Kudos to them for keeping customer service in America.

I had some fraudulent use on my Discover Card a few weeks ago. They were quick to find it with computer evaluation of my use trend. They immediately closed that account and opened another.

Also, I recommend the gas card from Discover. It's not openly advertised. I get 5% cash back on the first $1500 I buy, 3% on the next $1000 and 1% on everything after that.

I agree, they have excellent service. I attempted a cash advance at a bank, and something didn't work right (I can't remember what it was now). I called Discover from the lobby on my cell phone, and they fixed it while I spoke, and got the cash advance right away.

I've had them call me about charges they suspected were fraudulent (they were) before I saw a statement. Closed the account and promptly sent new cards. Much better than an experience I had last year with BoA. Tell me again why I keep doing business with them? :dunno:

We've had the Discover about 15 years and the only times anything came up they were excellent in handling it. It's the only card we use for personal stuff.

I also try to use Discover, but the problem is that not everyone takes it.

For the year I was active in selling aviation radios, I set up to take cards most of that time. I pushed Discover all I could. For keyed rates, Visa and MasterCard wanted 2.2$ and 2.25%, respectively. American Express wanted 2.9%. Discover wanted only 1.9%, for keyed numbers. That may not seem like a lot but for the vendor who does a substantial amount of sales via the web or telephone, it adds up to quite a savings.
