Had mongo storms move through here about 4 or 5 AM. 80 mph straight line winds measured NE of town. Looks like the same system passed through the farm, and I see a lot of Tornado Warnings out that way. Is the Farm OK?

Well i got a text from her. some tree damage, power is out. power is also out for 79,999 other people in the area. damage is worse at other places than theirs.

Thanks for the update Tony. I knew something was up because I have sent her 3 messages and no response, quite unusual for Diana. Keep us posted Tony if you have any updates.

will do. All I really know is Matt Michael was driving past there this morning on his way back from two days of tree climbing in Arkansas. He called her and apparently they decided the damage at her place wasn't bad enough for him to stop. He did say it sounded like Joplin got pretty trashed though.

That's true, but the lyrics are from one state kitty-cornered to the SW. But no reason to think a guy from a state that has never had a hit show written about it would know the difference. :P
The waving wheat,
Sure smells sweet,
While the wind moves sweetly cross the plain....

Man, I'd say it's about time for Diana to put in whole house generator. Keep us posted, Tony.

Reasons to live in Mizzou: It''s beautiful, it's affordable, and military pensions are not taxed there.

Thanks for posting this Tony. Still no power. Thank goodness for generators. Lots of damage in this area. We were driving to Joplin when it hit. Tornado warnings popped up all around us.

Glad you and Tom are okay all things considered, Diana!

All y'all have had a difficult 18-24 months wx wise.

We had tornado warnings in SE KS, I recorded 83 mph winds on my personal weather station. Luckily no damage to the house.
I actually had worms hitting my bedroom window, it was interesting to say the least.

Best,

Were they trying to get in out of the storm? Did you hear tiny, squeaky little worm voices crying, "For the love of nature, man, let us in!!"??

I'm just asking is all... :)

Thanks Kevin. :) Still no power yet, but they say we'll have power back for sure by Monday evening.

Wow, 83 mph! Rudy, I'm interested in hearing about your weather station. What does it consist of?

I don't understand about the worms. What were they doing flying through the air?

I'm glad to hear you guys didn't have any damage.

I got it as a gift for christmas, attached it to an extendable pole, its wireless and sends data in to two touchscreen receivers in the house. I would be glad to let you know more if you are interested

As far as the worms go, we just built the house and there is a lot of mud around it, the winds were so strong that they were picking them up and throwing them against my window. It was unreal.

And of course, being Air Force Weather I was completely nerding out the whole time.

Awesome Man. Worms flying against the window! From one weather nerd to another, congratulations.

I have several receivers for temperature probes with the 4 transmitters in various places. Various brands like Radio Shack understand the protocol. The biggest pain is that they never hook up with each other until you remove teh batteries and power it up, which means you have to set the time and date and time zone and such. :mad3:

But based on all the antural disasters why the heck does anyone live there?
I'm seriously starting to wonder that myself. Anyone want to buy this place? 220 acres of tics and chiggers and snakes (sometimes they come in the house). Labor intensive...only the young and/or energetic should consider living here. Repairs needed often on old buildings, equipment, and machinery. Frequent tornado warnings, but no basement or storm cellar. Occasional ice storm. Not unusual to lose power for days (still no power here). Unreliable internet service. Mowing takes 8 hours/week. Nearest decent grocery store is 8 miles away. Nearest movie theater is 30 miles.

I'm getting irritable, so I'll quit, but the list of reasons why I feel the need to move from here is long.

Hey! It's the same as my place only mine is about 25% of that. :D

Diana -

I've got mosquitos instead of the chiggers and ticks. No snakes. Tornado warnings happen, but aren't quite as frequent as yours. Power is reasonably reliable (except for when the kid crashed his car into the pole at the end of the road a couple weeks ago, it's usually squirrels shorting our transformer) and back up in a period of hours. Internet service is great, less than a mile to the grocery store and less than 2 to a 14-screen movie theater...

But I have to get in a *car* to get to an airplane. In fact, the club birds are 1/2 hour drive away, though if I had my own and bought a hangar I could improve that to 5 minutes driving (~20 biking). You can walk out your door and there's a RUNWAY.

I'd trade ya in a heartbeat.

You mean give up show business?

Move further south into the Mountains:D No worrys for tornados in the hills!

Once upon a time, I worked in a building at the southern end of the Texas Medical Center. One of the two electrical substations serving the Center was right behind our building.

We still had unreliable power.

After the nth time that Houston Lighting and Power blamed it on a squirrel, we started accusing them of having throw-down squirrels.

I live on the western edge of "suburbia", there is plenty of farmland and undeveloped property further west. When I moved here 20+ years ago I wired the house for an emergency generator figuring that this far out I'd be losing power fairly often and would likely be pretty low on the priority list for powerline repairs. But in those many years I've never experienced a power outage that lasted more than 2-3 hours and other than a brief flicker or two there's only been three times that I was at all affected by an outage. Go figure.

we've got ticks, chiggers, snakes, snapping turtles AND mosquitos; six point five miles to the grocery/gas station; fifteen to the store; tornadoes AND hurricanes!

I love it here.

Just like you love it there, Diana, when you're not storm-struck. :)

I suppose you're right, Tom. :) I'm tired of everything being harder without power...especially communicating with people.

Heh. In my case, it's pretty easy to tell, especially if I'm home at the time. I hear a huge BAM! as the fuse on the transformer (which is full of gunpowder) blows out. I call the power company and they come out to replace it, and usually somewhere in the surrounding area I find a squirrel's tail, with one end kind of charred where the squirrel used to be. :yikes: Those little bastards just don't quit...

Jasper has had power for a few days now. There are no poles or lines down between here and there. But, we still don't have power and might not get it till tomorrow...if we're lucky. I don't understand. :dunno:

When we lived on the ranch the power company described the conditions they were required to meet before restoring power. The bottom line was that the entire segment had to be intact, blah. I always thought it was really just an excuse to give the chiggers a head start on the season.

I'm so sorry to hear that. You REALLY need a whole house generator. I think that would make all of the things listed much easier to handle.

Yep - get yourselves a generator, and put in a plug for it and a cutoff switch between the gen and the line so you don't backfeed the line! If you're REALLY going fancy, get one that has an autostart so you don't even have to go outside to crank 'er up! :)

What specific part of "low priority" do you not understand:D.

LOL I read that to Tom earlier and he almost choked on his MRE laughing. :D

Ah, that would explain it. East of us had a lot more damage. But, it doesn't seem fair. Is there a smilie for pouting?????

Looks like we won't get power back today.

My sister and brother in law just got their power back today in southern Illinois. She works in a hospital with backup generators so she had to go to work the whole time, had to leave my little nephew at home with hubby in the dark :(

I'm a mile from "downtown" and had 6-8 power failures last year. My clock radio tells me I had one already this year.

The "best" being when my overhead line I looked at and said, "one of my trees could take that out and Edison won't care because it's only me." I was right.

The resident real estate expert on Today said a power generator was one of dumbest, lowest payback home improvements. That's prolly true to anyone that hasn't tried to live though 30 hours of no power. My brother's was out for 8 days. He has the whole generator setup now.

No need to worry about Diana. She's got that transparent hand bag that gets her out of any trouble.

You're just jealous of my fancy flightbag. Besides, since it's see-through I can find my red toenail polish quicker. ;)
