Hello, please see the attached screenshot of a metar at lga today. I'm trying to decipher the remarks only section. Some of it I get, but I can't find a good source for deciphering other parts.

Doesn't look like the decode worked on the remarks section.

Sometimes if you just sound it out it makes some sense.

Peak wind 170 27kts at 1813Z
Lighting Distant Southwest to Northwest
Occasional lightning in cloud and cloud to ground SW to NW
Thunderstorm Ended 29 minutes after the hour, began 30 minutes after (?? doesn't sound right)
Occasional lightning In clouds and cloud to ground South west to northwest
Thunderstorm moving Northeast
Temperature 27.8C Dewpoint 21.7C

I think, that's without looking anything up.

Thank you! That is very helpful. The part I can't decipher is the last section:

T02720222

Thunderstorm Ended 29 minutes after the hour, began 30 minutes after

That TS block of text appears not the have been displayed correctly by the OPs app.

Is that what this was supposed to say?

I just looked at the screen shot ending in 1456540.

Also pulled from the .gov website:

KLGA 071830Z 19014G23KT 10SM TS FEW020 SCT038CB SCT100 BKN250 28/22 A2979 RMK AO2 PK WND 17027/1813 LTG DSNT SW-NW TSE29B30 OCNL LTGICCG SW-NW TS SW-NW MOV NE T02780217

So time travel apparently has been invented...unless it started at 1730 and ended at 1829???

The report was 18:30, TS began at 18:30, not sure what you're getting at with the time travel remark?

TSE29 - does that not translate to Thunderstorm Ended at 29 after the hour? How does the thunderstorm end before it began? Time travel....or @Tantalum 's avatar.

One ended at :29, another one started at :30. I guess it's weird it would code it as stopping and starting one minute apart but I don't think there's any time travel involved.

Ahhh. When I checked it shows TS OVHD.

yeah, you have to select the time frame and go back however many hours. I saw the overhead one too. (If you go to the .gov site)

The amazing 59min thunderstorm.

And the old rule applies. When the remarks are that long, its probably a sucky time to go flying. :)

Wait, no one said that we should get rid the cryptic, abbreviated METAR yet?

Temperature and dewpoint. 0272 = 27.2 C, dewpoint 0222 = 22.2

I get it they go to one decimal place. That amount of precision may be useful to some. But what the ell is having space for the leading zero about? Do they really think anyone is going to be around to read it if it gets to 100?

Because they put a 1 there when it's negative, they don't use M in the precision temp/dewpoint.

Shhh. The FAA is busy being all “NexGen” now. Can’t have anybody saying their tech is archaic...

And we’re all flying “Free Flight” clearances now and controllers aren’t needed because the boxes do it all for us, and...

LOL! Oops sorry, I took a trip down memory lane to FAA marketing land of... 1990. Hahahahaha.

I will be on board with that as soon as those same people start advocating that all numbers be written out in text form as well.

Zip codes, phone numbers, etc...

I can process the raw metar probably 8 times quicker than reading the decoded versions. No joke.
