Deadstick landing... AND takeoff!

I think the guy needs to be tracked down and sanctioned by PETR for killing that poor innocent rock.

Some of the best flying I've seen.
You need to get out more then.

This is great engine off flying

That was one of the dumbest decision making demonstration I have ever seen. Not only was it foolish to not leave himself an out had he guessed his glide ratio wrong, he did not even bother to check out what the take off area hazards were.

I'll just shake my head and once again realize how evolution has failed us.

Dumbest? I think you should get out more. :wink2:

He would have just started the engine has he come up short on the glide. I'm sure this wasn't the first time he did it. The plane is very light, and he knows it's performance limits pretty well, but I'm sure there are folks that would ban him from do that kind of flying. :mad2:

My principal concern was, what if he had tripped and fallen down when first pushing down the hill?

Nonsense. He's very familiar with that landing and takeoff site, even the rocks to the side of his plane's flight path in ground effect.

Even by just viewing his film(s) one can easily see that by steering slightly to the totally unobstructed side, he can quickly avoid smashing into the big rock that he flys over had he "guessed" his glide ratio wrong, as you say.

Taking off over the big rock just looks more spectacular, whether with the engine on, or with the even more reliable gravitational power of the gliding takeoff, which has been used by aviators for eons.

Energy management... the reason I want to get a glider rating and learn more about how to make use of it.
