Anyone provide a PIREP on the David Clark X11 headset?

I upgraded to Zulu's last year but I could not get my Bride to make the switch. She loves the DC H10-13.4S set that she has. I finally decided to make the switch for her and hope she likes it. I'm tired of wires sticking out under her headset all the time, at least with the X11 she can pretty much plug and play with her iPod and other stuff. Heck, their David Clarks, green and provide better protection with less headclamp on longer trips, what's not to like.

I have not heard much good about the X11. I am a DC fan. I also have the H10-13XL and a Zulu and still prefer the DC. My preference is based on fit issues and the far better passive noise isolation with the DC. The Zulu is as quiet as the DC when it is turned on. But I get some noise leakage when I turn my head. One thing I have done that really makes the DC much better is to use 9VDC lithium batteries. I now only replace those once or twice a year as opposed to the Alkaline batts. If she likes the fit of the DC she has and you want to upgrade her to ANR then go to the H10-13XL instead of the X11.

I tried on the X11 when it first came out but was not impressed with the fit, the passive isolation is reported to not be very good and the ANR is ok, not as good as the other DC nor the Zulu.

Re: DC X11 PIREP?

I couldn't find a "DX11", but if you mean the X11, I found this report: http://www.vansairforce.com/community/showthread.php?t=12505

Yes, the X11, to late to change it once you hit the button.

Thanks for the link, reviews not so good. :frown3:

Thanks Scott, we shall see if they work for her otherwise I'll put them up for sale and she can stick with the 10-13.4s. I will look into the H10-13XL set.

Gary,.. PM Lee (Nav8tor), he has a pair. Maybe Mary could try them before you purchase.

Rob is right that Lee has a pair. When I asked Lee about them he really didn't have anything to compare them to since he had not had an ANR before.

The ONLY way to try headsets IMHO is in the plane thats just life. I like my Lightspeed 20XLCs but tried a friends bose on my trip to Gastons a few years ago. Guess what when your flying 9+ hrs ANY headset gets to feel uncomfortable.

I've also tried the Zulus they are nice but do clamp as well.

Gary:

If the H10-13.4 is in good shape, why not just install (or get installed) a Headsets, Inc. ANR conversion? I took and old, beat-up H10-40, installed the Headsets, Inc. ANR conversion and new ears-thingies, and I could not be happier. The ANR works very well.

The 13.4, with its superior microphone setup, would be an ideal candidate.

Thanks all!

I sent Lee a PM so we'll see what he has to say. I agree Adam, on the really long trips 'everything' tends to feel clamped to the brain container......I just want her to have some quiet when I put her on isolate so she can sleep with her music. She has mentioned a few times that the 10-13.4s's do hurt a bit after a few hours, I didn't have the heart to tell her it may be do to her head swaying back and forth while she sleeps, banging the ear cups.....:nono:.

The headset will be here tomorrow......now if her tiffeny bracelet makes it on time she can have them both at the same time (which is always good while bringing in new airplane stuff). I just wanted to pick up a few things for her since she has busted chops taking care of my sorry butt while recovering from the new hip.

If my DC H10-13.4s does not sell I may try that upgrade, and then upgrade her existing headset. At least we'll have two really good headsets for pax.

Do those super-light-weight molded in-ear systems do any better about not being ear-itating after a long flight?

I've attempted two different sets of custom molded earpieces and both became uncomfortable after an hour or two. The issue wasn't the earpiece itself, just the fact that the weight of the boom mic was loading my ear canal uncomfortably.

Overall I've been pretty happy with mine. I can wear them for hours without getting a headache like I used to with my DC 10-40s and I've never had any trouble with them. At times it seems like they don't block out as much noise and they should but that might be in comparison to my old passive pair that blocked out everything, whereas the active pair blocks just the harmful frequencies.
