I am heading to some military training in Dayton for most of December. Couple questions:

Any place fun to fly in the area? (I will search the cool places to fly section too)

Know of anyone who rents a plane without requiring a checkout? (just want to save some $$$ since I will only be there a short period).

I'm just north of Dayton. Of course, if you are in town for military training, you will almost certainly be at WPAFB, which is the home of the USAF Museum, which is a very cool place, and since you are already at the base, you don't even have to fly there!
You could also fly up to I-17, which is in Piqua, OH and take a tour of the Hartzell Propeller factory.
Can't help with the plane rental, however.

Yeah, I can help with destinations, not so much with airplane. There's a nice little restaurant and museum at I74. OSU has a nice little brunch place as well, and TZR has a really good barbecue place. And there's a really nice restaurant at LUK, and the terminal is rather cool. PMH also has a nice diner.
If you're around when the warm weather rolls around again you'll want to head up to the Lake Erie Islands. They all have airstrips.

You can go up I-75 to the Armstrong Air & Space Museum (https://www.armstrongmuseum.org/ ) in Wapakoneta. KAXV (Niel Armstrong Airport) unfortunately isn't very close. If you like amusement parks, see Cedar Point in Sandusky.

Not sure there are many who will rent you a plane without a checkout (I know wouldn’t) ... but why not make it part of the activity?

Offer to do the checkout as part of one of these trips with a CFI, and maybe pick up a new skill or two in the process.

A relatively short flight to the north will lead you to about half a dozen little islands with airstrips in Lake Erie. A mixture of moderate, short, and grass fields. Several are about 1800', and one of the private strips is half of that. Take him/her out to lunch on an island trip in return for a discount on the CFI rate perhaps?

No one does, except that company (whose name escapes me at the moment) where you get checked out once then you can rent at associated locations.

Open airplane.com is the one paflyer was thinking of.

Sportys at I69 which also has a warbird museum.

Not far KEYE eagle creek in Indianapolis, has a great restaurant literally 100 yards from the front door of the FBO.

Port Clinton KPCW has an aviation museum and a good restaurant on property

Seymour (Freeman) KSER has an air force museum for all of the military aircraft that was brought back from WWII. No food on property.

As stated earlier, all kinds of islands on the lakes that would be fun, but not sure in December.

Grimes Field in Urbana has a museum and they are restoring a B-17.

WACO Field in Troy has a small WACO Museum.

The WPAFB Aero Club was disbanded a few years ago and was “resurrected” as MacAir Club at I19. Even have some of the old Aero Club Cherokees.

Cheers

Since you're mil they'll probably treat you well, I was one of their first "civilians" and, well, "redheaded stepchild" comes to mind. They'll definitely require a checkout though. And monthly dues (that cover renters insurance), etc. No initiation/joining fee though.

A few months ago I had a good bite to eat at MIE if nobody mentioned that one yet.

Welcome to the Miami Valley.

Don't forget Sporty's (I69) on Saturday for a free hotdog, Met, or Brat or two.

I do not believe you will find anyone that will rent you a plane without a check out.
