Your best Bet: ( imho)

Fly in to 06C, modern, friendly municipal airport with big concrete apron
take train into city ( Roselle station is 1/2 mile from 06C)

this drops you in the heart of the loop, summertime in Chicago is great. All kinds of new hotels this summer, ( look up new Hyatt @ Chicago Athletic assn.) or any chain in "River North" or Michigan Ave (1200 S address or north) would be central to all attractions.

Do not get a car- between the Metra and "EL", it works great.
Museum Campus, Millennium Park ,Michigan Ave ( Shopping) and anywhere for great restaurants.

He did, but I don't fly anywhere near PWK, so I don't want to mangle the explanation.

IIRC, I believe that he said because PWK is a busy airport, and it only has 1 approach so in order to stack planes in they need people to cancel out. But, since MarkZ works that area for Chicago Tracon, he is much more qualified to explain it than me.

Good advice, just be sure you don't need an IFR clearance in or out. No approaches and ORD is very close.
 
Long story short on canceling IFR and circling at PWK.

We have only one way into PWK. From the north. If one comes in and circles IFR, nothing stops that aircraft from setting up a nice 3-4 mile final. No Bueno for ORD operations. If circling VFR, the aircraft has to remain clear of the Bravo, which allows ORD to keep launching departures.

Circling IFR at PWK requires ORD to stop or delay vector departures to accommodate the PWK operation.

If I'm flying inbound from the East/Northeast (Michigan) to KLOT/1C5, as I approach, South Bend Approach always has a reroute for me: OXI-EON-JOT. That's a "force" cancellation also.... Ah, no thanks, I'll go VFR direct the rest of the way and save the extra 25 minutes.

Every time I touristed Chi town I landed at Midway. . . . its right there - its easy in and out, lots of service available - you can select taxi, orange line, or Uber and get back to your airplane simply. Use Atlantic - ask them to waive fees but buy a top. Min 17 gallons waives all their fees- weekend 50 cent 100LL discount - ask for it- they'll match the signature discount.

You should not be worrying about the difference between $7.50 a gallon and $4.5 self serve somewhere out in the boonies - you are flying a GA airplane 700nm - you want to fly to Chicago or Dupage? even 50 galllons of gas is $375 vs. $225, plus the additional cost of getting into the city.

If you want to fly to Aurora - then fly to Aurora - if you want to fly to Chicago, the extra $100 to land in the city and get a free ride or pickup is worth it. Esp if you are flying in Friday aftnm / even - you REALLY want to spend an hour or more sitting in vehicle traffic?

It costs you a minimum of $400 each way in a piston just for gas - you're gonna whine over spending an extra $100?

We flew into FTW from the SW this weekend and returning Sunday we had to pick our way around some moderate cells. Not terrible though. Looking NE that day, it would have been a busy and long day for you picking your way through that for 700NM. I think you made the right decision. The trip back from Chicago wouldn't have been relaxing.
 
Agree with other folks - pay to land at MDW...be a cool experience too. Then take the orange line into downtown...there's several stops but jump off a few blocks from Michigan Ave and you are good to go - plenty of hotels, shopping, great restaurants around you can do on foot or even more for a modest cab ride somewhere.

I'm not sure how to get to any GA stuff from the main terminal - but worse case you can take a cab or maybe the FBO will shuttle you over to main terminal where you can easily get to/from the train station.

Sounds like a fun trip. I want to do one to STL but it's in the 5 hour range in my 235 from Austin.

I fly out of DPA - DuPage. I work for a company located in the west suburbs but we are moving downtown next month which possibly has me looking for a new job. I do not like the city and do not like going downtown for anything. That being said, DPA is not a bad option as you should be able to get a ride to the Metra station just a few miles away. The train ride is a little over an hour from there. And as others have mentioned Schaumburg is a good option and the Metra station is also just a short distance away.
