Curious how others handled similar situations.

You guys aren't doing it right...There used to be a very popular nightclub under the tower of KPTK, with a full expanse of windows facing out on the airfield. When I was single I would rent a plane at night on the other side of field, taxi it over to the bar with every single light on the plane turned on, rev the engine, then shut it down and walk into the bar...worked like a charm!
 
Buy yourself a huge additional life insurance policy over what you already have (make sure it doesn't have an aviation exclusion) to take care of your family if you crash and die. And don't buy the plane unless you can afford it while also saving for retirement. Estimate what you think the O and M will be and double that.

If you can swing all that your Dad shouldn't have any more objection.
 
Neither of my parents were keen on me flying. My now ex-wife probably wasn't too pro on it either.

I had one opportunity to fly with my father before he died. I let him fly a bit of the way to Camarillo. I think he understood the attraction. He also got to see my RV once, since my pickup happened while we were in AZ for Spring Training.

Anyway, point (if any) is do your thing, they'll come around. Might take a week, month, or year, but eventually.
 
Also... my step mother was into the flying idea. She went with me in a 172 from KFUL to KCNO (long trip) and I did two or three landings, than we took the long way back (via El Monte). She liked it a lot.

I tried to get her to be a "flying tourist." Taking dual with no real intention of finishing the PPL. (she's in her 80's)

She could easily be a "first solo" and done type.
