This is about ~2 miles northwest of Auburn Airport (S50).

Great pictures! Mammatus clouds are a little more rare in the NW than they are in the midwest!

What's interesting is that scientists aren't sure how they are formed. In fact, there are quite a few theories, but no definitive answers. Opportunity for research!

P.S.--When was the photo taken? I used to fly out of Auburn, so I know the "where".

Nice Shot, I saw a smaller version of those things coming out of an isolated thunderstorm cell over Logan Utah(KLGU) last summer as I was closing the hanger door on the my glider and was immediately satisfied with my decision to land and let that thing move through.

They look menacing but they really aren't. They ARE often associated with nearby menacing weather but regularly occur in benign conditions. A sky full of them at sunset during tornado season in the midwest is awesome. You can fly around under them all day with little risk as long as you are far enough away from the updraft :nono:and the hail :nonod:and the lightning:hairraise:

Are they also not filled with ice?
