KEY WEST, FLA. - A ship last used by the U.S. Air Force to track missiles and spacecraft has been sunk in the Florida Keys, creating a new artificial reef for sport divers and anglers.

The Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenberg sank in less than two minutes this morning, after demolition experts triggered a series of explosives that lined the both sides of the ship.

Key West City Manager Jim Scholl says he believes the 17,000-ton, 523-foot-long ship settled on the bottom of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary in an upright position, but he was waiting for confirmation from divers.

Why am I posting this?

Well this WW2 era ship also served time as a tracking ship for the USAF on the Eastern Space and Missile Center aka Cape Canaveral. I served on the ship a few times for launches. With the launch of TRDS the down range stations became obsolete by the late 1980's and were eliminated. Ships such as the Vandenberg were fill ins, going to places were there was no land to build a station.

Yeah, it's always sad to see the toys of our "childhoods" become relics. I really need to hurry up with stuff before I run out of time!

For me, I was at Oshkosh when they had a demo of the new F-14 that had just been delivered to the Navy. It hadn't even been painted yet. Then I lived long enough for the F-14 to be retired.

NOW GET OFF MY LAWN!

Neither do I. But growing and getting old are two different things.

Ain't that the truth, reminds me of a birthday card my wife gave me a few years ago!

Yes, we are old.

We actually used 300 baud.

By the time I bought my first modem I could spring for a direct connect at 300. A Radio Shack Modem 1 for $149. NO AUTODIAL youngster!

I didn't have a computer. I used it on my typewriter. Went through a fortune in paper and ribbon.

Ah, the joy of tweaking Hayes AT modem init/connect strings to get maximum performance...

Well, Scott, you do remember Abba - when they were first around... ;)

I wish to exercise my rights under the 5th Amendment to the US Constitution of the United States.

You might remember better if "taking the Fifth" really means "drinking a Fifth"

It's relative! My niece threw out that she'd never live to be old...like 30 or so while my Son who is 32 listened. Saw his facial expression change.

Never thought I'd be 62 but, it's coming this Summer.

Best,

Dave

I still use this modem! Is there anything newer? I may want to upgrade. :D

Yeah, and because of the interdependence of the functions, the order was important. Sometimes, you could get better performance by issuing 2 init strings to insure that one function was set before the related item was sent.
