The jacket sounds cool and you should go ahead and wear it. But the epaulets...I have to go dorky on that one. That is sorta like wearing a uniform when none is required.

Here is an intereting thought to go with my 'I think it is dorky position' In Illinois the government here has made impersonanting an airline pilot a crime. Well what is the legal definition of an airline pilot? I think we all have opinoins on what it could be but I do not believe there exists a statued that accomplishes the goal. If you were to wear the jacket with the epualets while on a flight and happen to transit ORD could you be arrested?

Travolta is in trouble...or does he actually have an ATP?

OK Nick we want to see the shirt at Gaston's this year
Dave

As there is no title "professional pilot", I'm not sure what you mean. I am a pilot, I behave and fly professionally, I have a commerical certificate, I am PIC pretty much all the time now, and I even earn a few bucks here and there doing intro flights. So am I professional pilot or not?

Judy

You are most definitely a professional pilot. You don't have to earn a paycheck flying to earn that title in my mind.

As far as the captain's stripes, I say go for it if you like 'em. If they make you uncomfortable, leave them at home. If you feel good, that will show through and whether someone thinks it's dorky or not won't matter. It's all about what makes you feel good. For me it's a hawaiian shirt sans epaulets and Buffett tunes on the mp3 player.

Ahhh...someone with whom I can relate. But...a Parrotthead...in Montana?? B)

I used to ride the rodeo
but I've got Brahma fears
so I'll just stick to aeroplanes
and gently pop my ears.....

I had the same dillema. Solved it by wearing the jacket all the time, and putting on the epaulets whenever I was either flying for hire or doing something where the "captain" symbol was useful, like flying an angel flight, or doing young eagles.

So I have four and three stripe epaulets in gold and silver, and they go on with velcro. It's easy to keep them in the flight bag for when they are needed.

Travolta has an ATP, is typed in the 707, and was a QANTAS pilot for a while (on a goodwill promotional tour). I believe he still has a relationship with the airline.

Coming back from a ferry flight the TSA guy in colorado springs was concerned by my flight gear and the epaulets in my bag. Took a short talk with the supervisor, showing my certificate, logbook and the ferry contract to convince him that I was legit. Was a drag having to check the big flashlight and the fuel tester and the leatherman (normally in the flight bag), but I was glad I'd moved that stuff ahead of time.

OK, guys, you can quit voting now. I'd already decided the epaulets were dorky, and that opinion was clinched as I wandered around SEA airport yesterday waiting for a connection. Lotta the airline pilots who fly out of SEA (most Alaska/Horizon pilots) wear leather jackets, and I saw only ONE with the epaulets, even though the jackets all had the straps.

Yeah, I know, but hey, JB's sis lived just about 40 miles from me. Occasionally you could find him in the bar in Ringling, but I never got to run into him. Anyhoo, I'm in Texas now, just moved, and to Livingston....And by golly it IS a Livingston Saturday Night!

I tried to vote twice for Dorky, but it wouldn't let me.

Hey, Anthony. I'm in Denver right now. Not for too much longer, though. My flight leaves in a couple of hours. Had dinner with another pilot last night, but from another board. I should try to collect more pilot locations from this board. Oh well.

We ate at Zengo. Cool restaurant. I'm amazed with what they've done with that part of Denver. I used to live in this area, and that part of Denver was a mess, what very few times I drove through it (fast, if I could).

Judy, next time give me a shout! Is that place in the Lodo district? When Coors field went in, a lot of the bad areas were removed. It is a nice downtown with a lot of trendy places. Not the cow town it used to be for sure, but I like cow towns. Glad you enjoyed it !

I just got back from Denver on Friday. Did you you get a chance to stop at the Falling Rock Tap House? HMMMmmm BEEEeeerrrrr!!!
:cheers::cheers::cheers:

The Scene
A haven from the trendy LoDo crowd, Falling Rock offers an impressive collection of beers on tap--75 in all--as well as a comfortable, old-school watering-hole atmosphere. Conversation, ale, a couch, food and a jukebox dominate the first floor. Downstairs, you'll find a cigar room, two pool tables and darts.

I too ate at Zengo but on Tuesday nice resturant but we did not have great service.
