Some of the guys from here in town pulled the club Grob out to Ulysses KS in the western part of the state over Memorial Day for a weekend of flying. They had a pretty good time. here is a video they made:

How the heck did they get that shot, going outside the cabin?

Okay, I'll go watch the rest of it, but that was neat!

Edit:
Okay, after watching it in full-screen, it was obvious that the back-seater just put the camera outside the window, but it still looked great!

I liked the little bit of precip. Oh, they did look about 500' below cloudbase to me :D.

Why Ulysses? A group of gliders there? Just curious, is all.

Nice vid Tony.

I think they go to Ulysses beause one of the cropduster guys out there has a Pawnee set up for towing, and he also has a few gliders and a nice big hangar to store gliders.

earlier this month one of the guys took a tow from hutchison on saturday and flew to Ulysses. Then on Sunday he took a tow from ulysses and flew back to hutch!

Soaring conditions are really good out there. Back during the war they had regularly scheduled service with CG4 cargo gliders between training bases at Hutch and Uly.

Thanks for that, Tony. I'll have to forward that to the guys in the club up here.

sounds good Matt.

Are any of your cross country pilots up there planning to fly the Kansas Cowbell Classic on July 10 weekend at Hutch? straight out distance contest, who can argue with the fun in that??

Cool video. Tony is that contest handicapped? That is your kind of flying. It it is a weakish day you might be able to do quite well.

pete - my understanding is that historically they base it on straight distance. but im sure if i wanted to feel better about myself i could handicap the results.

I gotta get my trailer reassembled and my instrument panel powered by then. work work work.

I know how you feel. I got glider rides to give, new tires to install, and wheelbearings to repack this weekend. I may just get a little flying in.

I don't know. One guy owns a Libelle and regularly trailers it to/from the airport each weekend. Another guy owns a Cirrus and keeps it at the airport, tied down and under a full cover. I think the other club gliders only get taken apart and trailered every 10 years or so.

The next time I see them, I'll ask.

Matt
