Continental and United to Announce Merger.

The reactions here in Houston are largely negative, for a number of reasons:

1) We stand to lose a MAJOR employer in Houston (the 4th-largest). Granted, the jobs are likely safe for the near- and mid-term, but ALL of the corporate jobs will either be gone altogether or shipped to Chicago, which hurts our economy here.

There are probably quite a few people from Washington state that felt the same way about Boeing.

4) COA is part of our history, from the very early TTA days, through Texas International and ultimately Continental, it's always been 'Houston's Airline'. It will be very sad to see that go.
I used to fly Piedmont way back when. Nice folks. It sucked when U.S. Air vacuumed them up and destroyed their company culture. Borg comes to mind.

One thing I can say for sure is that it will certainly be interesting to see how things shake out!
Like Parkinson's, I imagine...

I just fervently pray that most of our upper management gets shown the door in the post merger airline.

I don't blame you. Management at UAL is godawful! As it is, management at most of the majors is focused more on making excuses, taking home large paychecks, and screwing the employees.

WRT AA merger talk, they are hot and heavy for a BA/IB tie-up. Who knows, if Greece imploded, maybe the EU will approve a trans-national merger...

It is what it is.

Unfortunately, a friend at Continental has the exact opposite desire. They don't trust their CEO any more than we do. They are greatly worried about the SCOPE clause. And they should be. I just hope ALPA looks out for everybody and doesn't throw the junior guys under the bus again.

I Management at UAL is godawful!

Tilton gets to be overlord for 2 years, then sashay away with what will surely be an obscene amount of money while the thousands of people that actually do the work wonder if they're going to get a check next week, much less have retirement...yay. :mad2:

Not the first time, won't be the last. People like that give management a bad name. Too many of these SOBs run companies like their personal fiefdoms.

Yes I have to agree with you. I feel sorry for the flight attendants. They make the least amount of money but are always the first to get cut. Lack of competition from Continental means that prices at the Denver hub will skyrocket.

I don't know that Continental was much competition since they moved their hub out of Denver 15 (?) years ago. The competition is more from Frontier (Republic) and Southwest. I never could understand why anyone would want to be a flight attendant. It seems to combine all the disadvantages of being a pilot with none of the advantages.

Agreed. Plus for most of those airlines you have to wear unattractive, ill-fitting polyester costumes.

Heh, let's come up with a new name for the airline, using letters from "United" and "Continental". :D

Well, since "Continental Untied" is so obvious, out of deference to our local United talent (Greg) I'll go with "Continued In Talent".

Got a pretty full tour of UA's operations at IAD the other day - very impressive. What impressed me most, I think, was that there were at least 10 of the top management personnel of UA/IAD that conducted the tour - for about 40 of us. I was delighted (and impressed) to see what the managers at UA are doing to improve the customer experience.... if they are able to make it happen, then it should make UA a much better airline (at least from IAD). Kinda fun poking around the underside of a 767 with the engine and other compartments opened up (had a maintenance chief explaining the systems). :):)
