computer question...

A common situation with computer "stuff". :P

I've got both the digital and analog cables connected to my Samsung monitor. The digital cable goes to the computer it is used with, and the analog cable is available if I want to connect a laptop to it temporarily. That's the plan, anyway. Never carried out in the year and a half it's been in place.

Those Samsung monitors are nice, aren't they.

I'm sure it's like my Dell where you can connect any and all inputs and switch between them by using the buttons and menus on/in the monitor.

Thanks Mike. I'll check it out Sunday night - heading to the beach for the weekend. When I took the stuff out of the box and tried to plug each cord into the laptop, none of 'em seemed to fit.

OK, the joke is that is Steven Spielberg - but at a wax museum. Yes, that was me about 8 years ago. Melanie Griffith???!! I've heard "Meg Ryan" many a time (mostly when I was younger) but never Melanie G.

When I got back from this particular trip and showed that photo around, I fooled a lot of people. haha
I knew he looked familiar but could not place the face at all.

See? Ya got both. Not only that but you can use it as an HDTV.

OK, yesterday I dug into the box again and LO found a cable that fits the laptop.

However, the max resolution that is in my laptop video card is apparently less than 1920 x 1200 or whatever the res on this monitor is - I checked, and maxed it out, but it was still less. I couldn't get the "whole picture" to show up on the monitor - both ends were cut off and I couldn't figure out how to get the left and right sides to show. Thus, using the various buttons on the far left side - you know, start, internet, programs, etc - I couldn't see so I couldn't do anything.

Any other ideas or just figure out which desktop to get and be done with it?

Thanks guys!

It's not letting you set the 2nd display different from the built-in one because it's mirroring the screen instead of extending.

Try rebooting 1 or 2 times with the monitor connected, go to display->properties->multiple monitor setup (right click-drag on the screen background) and select something like extend my display. You'll have several options. It takes a few tries for Windows and the display driver to recognize the 2nd screen and do what you want. As it always always is with Windows it helps to face Redmond, bow your head reverently and sacrifice a live chicken. :D

Mike, thanks. I'll sort that out and let you know how it goes! This is only temporary until I decide upon a decent desktop for all my photography.

Now, another question:

I bought Norton for the cheapie laptop (it was bundled with the computer, so I just paid for it...).

A few things - when a popup is blocked (which never ever is the true popups - it's only the useful popups such as Gmail opening a page... the real popups slide right through.....).. anyway, sometimes the popup notification is hidden, too, so I can't "find it" to allow it. I think Norton is hiding it.

FINALLY - I HATE the search function on Vista. It sucks. However, even worse is that %&* Norton definitely hides the search terms. I know it's searching, and it will go to the first search term - but since Norton is hiding the arrow buttons I can't find the next words.

I much prefer the old way to search, when that little box popped up and you just hit next, next...

Any way to improve the search function on Vista?
