Commonly flown aircraft....

Question 1: What do you think are the top 2 or 3 aircraft that just about every pilot has spent, or will spend, time flying during their flying career at some point? I'm not talking about the type of plane you trained in for your initial certificate... what will everyone get around to, sooner or later?
The top three have to be the Cessna 150/152/172

I'm basing my answer on the fact that the majority of pilots are not part of the 2% of the worlds wealthiest people but are more or less hard working individuals.

Question 2: what's the most fun aircraft you've flown? You can define 'fun' any way you like; capabilities, coolness/'wow' factor, whatever applies.
My favorite plane to fly is any plane that my daughter flies with me.

My coolness plane is the Commander 115

Flown all the Cessna series except the twins, Cherokees, King Air 200, J-3, Super Cub (on floats), AT-6, T-28 and almost all the military helicopters (UH-1, AH-1, OH-6, UH-60, CH-47), but its still a plain, old, stock Stearman for me.

Slow, gas guzzling, impractical, cold in the winter, hot in the summer, but I just love it. I grin every time I get in the seat. The AH-1 Cobra is a close second but for an entirely different reason:eek:)

That said, it hasn't left the hangar for over 2 months because of our lovely WX here in the PNW (thats the impractical part)

Mike-

The most fun airplanes I've ever flown are sitting in my hangar :) A J-3 and a Pitts S-1S...IMO more fun than S-2's. The Cub's not mine, but I fly it quite a bit. Other planes I've had fun in - Waco YPF-7, T-6, Stearman, BT-13, RV-3/4/6/8, Champ, Super Cub (wheels and floats), Citabria, Super Decathlon, Pitts S-2B/C, and 20 hrs of spam trike time in a 150. The J-3 and S-1S still can't be beat for pure fun. :)

I fly about 75% of my flight hrs per month in 'our' cub. The rest is either trips in a PA-28 or hood time in the PA-28. Got to say though, I don't think I would have nearly as much fun in a stock J-3. Ours is a reed clipped wing with 85hp and a super cub elevator.

Also have about 175 hrs in a 152 and got my private and instrument rating in one.

The most unique/coolest I have flown would definitely be a Twin Otter... a little under 5 hours logged in one.

I've never even sat in a Piper-anything. Would love to, though.

Probably the most fun airplane that I have access to is a Citabria, although having never flown it yet who knows how much fun it will really be.

Do it soon. You will find out what your feet are for. You haven't really flown yet.

Trainers are by definition going to be the most popular airplanes. Between the C150/152/172, PA28 series and J-3 Cub... Well, 99% of pilots have flown one or more of them. I've flown all of the above except for the 150.

what will everyone get around to, sooner or later?

Everyone? Dunno. Certainly a lot of interest in Bonanzas, but I don't think even close to "everyone" will get around to them sooner or later. I'm not even sure that's the most popular post-training aircraft. Awful lot of 182's in the world...

Question 2: what's the most fun aircraft you've flown? You can define 'fun' any way you like; capabilities, coolness/'wow' factor, whatever applies.

So many different kinds of fun! For "kick in the pants" fun, Extra 300. For landing-on-unusual-surfaces fun, a Super Cub - I've flown the same one on skis, floats and tundra tires. For just pure fun fun, a Husky - The 2005 (or so) and newer Huskies have new ailerons that really changed the control feel and make it a fingertip flyer, and it's really fun to leave the door and windows open and go whizzing around down low. Whee!

I'd venture a guess that most pilots of twins have flown a Piper Apache at some point.

I dunno about that. While I did do my rating in an Apache, they're old enough that there aren't many on rental lines any more. I think the most popular twin trainer these days is the rather unremarkable Seminole.

I think I have multi-engine ADD though - In a whopping 17.1 hours of multi time, I've flown an Apache, a pair of Senecas, a Twin Comanche, a Baron, and a Hawker 800 - An average of under 3 hours per plane. :D

I'm just as bad with tailwheels - 35.5 hours split between Citabrias, Extra 300, Stearman, J-3, Super Cub, Husky, Sport Cub, C180, and a Blanik glider - Just a bit over 3 hours per plane average here, with two (Super Cub and 7ECA Citabria) that I have a fair number of flights in.

I think the best plane is the Bellagio Avanti II

Is that like a Piaggio Avanti II with a casino in the back? ;)

I've got about 560 hours in 172s, 20 in Bonanzas, 30 in the mooney, and about 30 in the cub.

Of all the planes I've flown in, I think the B25 is the coolest. I've got about 20 hours in them, with 2 of them being in one of the front seats.

The 150/152 used to be the big winner in the accident rate contest, but now it's fallen way down to at least fourth with the 172 surging ahead. the PA-28 has held it's own, but the Cub barely makes it off the peg.

All but about one hour of my single engine time is in 182's, the FBO loaned us a Cherokee 140 while the 182 was in the shop once.;)
The most fun is always the first flight in "your" airplane! :D the most thrilling was flying my Citation for the first time! The most fun is flying the 182 with my son at the controls.:D:D

You know what's remarkable about this thread for me: the wholesale lack of:
- Pacer/Colt owners
- Cub drivers
- RV jockeys
Where are all those people?

1. Most common: I'd have to agree with those that sad 172/PA28

2. Most fun airplane I have flown: Probably the B-25

No idea on what most pilots will get 'round to (aside from trainers that are commonly found in clubs and on the lines).

Most fun for me is still the Citabria - beating out my Cub, Pitts and Waco time, and even time in my own RV-6 (for now ;-) )
