Combining hobbies / pastimes

That thing put up a good fight? That’s a good lookin fish if I do say so myself.

Bonefish have a need for speed so they look it and they fight like it. Perfect flyfishing targets in that the fishing is visual in sunny tourquoise colored waters. They readily take a fly that imitates a shrimp, small crab or other bit of food. They stay in shallow water as much as they can because the boogey man is looking for them in the deeper waters. They are always moving as singles, pods of 3 to 6, or schools of dozens. When you get one to eat you are rewarded with 2 or 3 reel screaming runs that go well into your backing, then they run out of gas and come to hand where you remove the barbless hook and release them. Few people eat them.

I like wading for them so it’s like a stroll on a big beach looking for shadows. Learning to see them before they see you is one of the big tricks but sometimes they just swim right at your feet. They are spooky but predictable. This particular place is highly pressured in the winter season and the fish are said to have PhDs. Very tough compared to other places I’ve been. I saw hundreds of fish in 5 days, had good shots at dozens, had about 8 get fooled, hooked 6 and would have landed all 6 if I hadn’t been trying to take videos at the same time.

The 5 days were like taking a 5 day tailwheel course; challenging but I’m a better fly fisherman today than last week.

Ive often found I can get more enjoyment out of my various hobbies or pastimes by combining them...take flying and amateur radio. [...] Well today I’m enjoying reading POA while sitting in the deer woods, with my bow across my lap. [...]

My fold up bike has been great with the plane. I’ve also flown to interesting places to video with my drone.

I'm sorry, I forgot the / your name, but did we meet at the PoA fly-in in Kentucky? If so, it was you who told me that you also like to combine flying and hunting and that Michigan's North Fox Island is a good place to hunt geese. I also thought that North Fox Island would be great for small game hunting, but have never seen anything but chipmunks there. I guess the snakes got everything else. ;)

Funny, we also like to take our folding bikes and my drone on trips with our plane.

I got my technician's amateur radio license in 2016, but never went on air, since I am not too interested in chatting on repeaters. I am however currently working on my general license as I hope that HF will be more interesting.

The idea is to combine amateur radio with another hobby of ours: Traveling. I think it would be fun to participate in the "parks on the air" program, where the goal is to make contact to / from state and national parks. Also, once we are done with building our Zenith, I would like to try aeronautical mobile. :)

[...] I used my paramotor once to find a geocache on an island.

This is awesome! In Germany, where my wife and I are from, you need a pilot's license for paramotors. We both earned it back then, but never actually bought one. Now that we live in the US, we are however becoming interested again. Wouldn't it be awesome to take the paramotors on a road trip and to go flying wherever we want?

How are you using yours? Just to buzz around locally or do you take it on trips?

Oliver

Mostly just buzzing around locally. Haven't used it in some years, though, since the local airport that allowed it closed and most of the other ppg pilots dispersed... it's very much a social sport.

I imagine that a lot of Grumman owners have that airplane because of the fold down rears seats. When I had one I liked to put a bike back there and fly to places to ride. It's also been used for airplane camping. Sleep in the plane.

Yep, that was me! I didn't get up to North Fox this fall: weather didn't cooperate, and for duck/goose season the weather at times can be scary!
