I was wondering if anyone used these. I just found them while seeking gifts for a friend. I bought them, because they sounded cool. I hope I didn't waste 57 bucks.
 
Now I have to scurry over to Google and see what the debbil they are...

They are intriguing if they work though I would be concerned with creating a choking hazard. Kind of like plastic ice cubes to keep your drinks colder longer. And I could see trying to drain the last ounce of coffee only to be smacked in the face by 5 chunks of steel.

Not really, seems the goal was to stabilize the temperature, and adding a large thermal mass will do that.

I think it's more an engineering fail. I'm just wondering how much thermal mass is needed to work. Even the graph "busting" them shows they do perform the desired task, it's just that the effect was small.
 
You can use a vacuum insulated stainless steel flask or cup, like Klean Kanteen or Hydroflask, and the contents stay hot or cold nearly all day.
 
Just because it doesn't work doesn't mean they can't make money.

OK, so, I'll throw the question out there:

Friends of mine, married (DINKs) are foodies with a whole lotta hobbies. Travel, theater, food, etc. I was trying to think of something unique to get them.

Any other ideas? Food related is probably the easiest. I saw a website (I think Mark Bittman?) which sells slabs of Himalayan salt which looked pretty interesting.

You might not want to tell your friends this, but horse people have been buying those for salt licks for a number of years. Same pretty little block, but with a hole in it for a piece of rope at about a third the price.

I remember them well. The ones we used to get were HUGE.

There's a place that does unique & gourmet cheeses of the month. Interesting selections, and various cheeses we'd not normally think of. All tasty, except the cheese that was like pool chalk - I'd be as happy to not have that again....
