Orig: Original Blue Angel pilot dies at age 86

***

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A man whose pioneering flying career with the U.S. Navy began in the age of biplanes and ended in the jet age has died. Retired Navy Capt. Roy "Butch" Voris, an original Blue Angel, died at his home in Monterey, California. He was 86.

He sounds like a great and honorable pilot who lived a full life and served his country well; a legend. I'm sure he will be sadly missed by his family, friends and peers.

Just out of curiosity. I would imagine the Navy would do a fly by or missing man formation flight at his funeral services (or is that reserved for war-time deaths?). Has the Blue Angels ever done a fly by at a past members services?

I've never been to a military funeral, but I have attended a funeral for a service related death of a police officer. They did a missing man formation fly by of police helicopters. Coupled with the sound of taps playing, it was a tear jerker like I've never experienced before.

Would really be cool (and fitting!) if the Angels could do a flyby for him. They were in Washington State last weekend, scheduled for Colorado this weekend, with the following off. So, it is at least conceivable....

I would venture to guess that if it physically possible, they will. He was the Grand Daddy of all the Blues that came after him.

Not just "an original Blue Angel", but the FIRST Blue Angel. Butch was responsible for the formation of the demonstration team. I finished his biography "First Blue" a few weeks ago...a very interesting read. He will be missed.
