Just got a call from my CFI and as of June 12, Reno will have no aircraft maintenance for GA. The shop was bought by a medical flight company and they will only be servicing their own King Airs and Cheyennes.

Are there any other Class C airports with zero maintenance available?

I am thinking of moving my plane to Carson City.

Austin Bergstrom had no GA maintenance for years. We finally have a shop that will work on our little airplanes, but it was a long time coming.

Reno makes it difficult for a mobile A&P to come onto the field. They need a Reno business license, $1 or $2 million in liability insurance (can't recall) and a $100 fee. For most, it is too much hassle. The airport used to be extremely anti-GA and it is getting better, but still has a long way to go. A few are set up for this, but it is often easier to fly to them at their regular shop.

Most airport sponsors have established minimum standards for FBOs or shops that would require them to offer repair services in order to operate on the field.

Normally there are many hoops to jump through in order to open a shop on an airport. However if you are an aircraft owner and have a hangar, you can have your choice of mechanics do your mx.

Try Minden Aircraft Repair. They are fair priced and highly skilled.

Thanks - I have started using Carson as it is a bit closer - esp if I have to drive one way. One of the flight schools on the Reno airport flies their planes to Minden for maintenance.

That doesn't work at FNL on our ground lease. Same rules apply to our hangars. But the door closes and I have good lights.

I've been on both sides of that equation and have to tell you that the powers that be that set the rules for insurance, permits, and all that crap are opening themselves for a lawsuit if somebody gets hurt and they DON'T have those rules in place.

I also know that I've been in on the selection of an airport manager or two and can tell you in the first five minutes of the interview if the guy is going to be reasonable about "closed doors and lights" or be a real prick about it. We've had years and years of good managers and two years of the biggest prick I've ever met. He went so far as to hire a "line boy" whose job it was to snoop around and tattle on the "closed doors" folks. Damned if their personal vehicles didn't suffer serious cosmetic and minor mechanical problems after 18 months of this crap and they both up and resigned not long thereafter.

Of course, as an elected who was sworn to uphold the law, I had to wring my hands and bemoan such dastardly deeds. I would NEVER condone such action, but I couldn't control everybody that used the airport. Not my job, man.

Your job is to either elect folks who can sympathize with our litigious society and allow for some reason in the application of the rules ... OR ... DAMMIT RUN FOR OFFICE YOURSELF.

Jim
