Christmas is getting out of hand

Here it is October 17th and stores have had their Christmas stuff out for two weeks already. I can't find anything that USED to be on the shelves where all the Christmas decorations are now. I'm no Ebenezer Scrooge but can we at least get Halloween and Thanksgiving out of the way first?
 
I like that Nordstrom sticks with the policy of not decorating for Christmas until the day after Thanksgiving. Unfortunately the other places don't let us get into November before putting out Christmas stuff in September.

But they'll stop doing it when we stop buying it. Us American consumers are dumb.
 
Lol. I personally think the commercial aspect of christmas is the only fun part as I long gave up on any religious aspects however I too would prefer that it would not start so early or last as long.
 
I've complained more than once (in January) that no long sleeve shirts were for sale in the stores. Similarly with no short sleeve shirts in July, when it's 100° outside and I can't wear any of the storeful of long sleeve shirts for another four months . . . I think the "Christmas in September" will be as difficult to stop, if not more so, simply because Christmas sales is what keeps most stores open.

Don't get me wrong... I friggin' LOVE Christmas. It's by far my favorite holiday. I enjoy putting the tree up, hanging the Christmas lights, and finding ways to get the pine smell in the apartment without having to get a real Christmas tree since I DON'T love cleaning up after I take down the tree after the new year.

I just hate hearing Christmas songs before Thanksgiving and seeing decorations and stuff NOW. It dilutes the holiday. Christmas season starts after Thanksgiving and ends on the 25th with decorations coming down the week of January 1st. That's the rule. And when I'm king of the world, that's the way it's gonna be.
 
Ha, I can't remember the last time we put up a tree.

I love the holidays, but I look forward to being with the family for a few days more than anything. Best part about it.
 
I doubt the retailers would be rolling this stuff out and using up floor space for this stuff if nobody was buying it.... so who the heck is buying Christmas stuff in October?

I am always wondering who the heck is buying the Xmas goodies in August?! That was usually the time when the first supermarkets offered marzinpan, ginger bread and all the other Xmas sweets back in Germany... On the other hand: you won't get the stuff more fresh at any time other than in August... :D:rolleyes:

You'd be surprised how dumb some of these big chains are I could write a book on the stuff i've seen in 12 years of retail.

Anyways yeah working retail I hate the holidays I've become a straight up grinch I wouldn't even acknowledge their existence if it wasn't for the wife enjoying them. Plus with chains now opening up thanksgiving it just means everyone attached to them vendors etc now have to work that schedule too. My last year with Coke we worked late wed night and came in for a few hours thursday am(6am to 8am just to touch up) then wal mart wanted us there 12 am friday morning and out of the store by 4am (in between various dept sales) it turned thanksgiving into a lets hurry and get family visits out of the way so I can get to bed

Bit off topic. Favorite Christmas memory I was probably 22-23 years old woke up about 930 cause dad was out on a trip and we didn't have to celebrate cause they opened gifts earlier. Played some videogames and lounged around for a bit. Got in my old dream car a 1995 3000GT put on some Shinedown and Breaking Benjamin rolled the windows down and drove up to the dragon (hwy 129) no one out on the roads just me cruising around enjoying a 60-70 degree east tn christmas stopped by the lake on my way back and laid on a picnic table enjoying the sun and solitude. IDK why thats my favorite but its just a memory that sticks with me.
 
I agree. It's out of control.

Just last evening as my wife & I took a walk we commented on how many houses had commercial-style Halloween decorations...lights, blow up creepy things etc.

When I was a kid we might throw a few home carved jack-o-lanterns on the porch but that was pretty much it. I'm not bashing Walmart but it seems like we never saw this until they came into town.

The sad things is it's the lower middle class & poverty areas that seem to do it most.
 
We're now at the point with my wife's family where everyone just tells each other what they want a couple months beforehand and everyone just gets what they requested. It was discussed last year that maybe we could just have a nice dinner and skip the whole gift swap thing but one family member still adamantly wants to do it so.... I'm getting a new pair of jeans in 2 months.

Christmas was great when I was a kid but now if I want a nice thing under $50 I'll just order it on amazon prime. Most of the things I really want are either too expensive or(I'm told by my wife) too technical for someone other than me to know what to get so I just put in a clothing order every year now.

I go Christmas shopping in January. Some really, really good deals at that time. Sales are usually barely advertised so I have been known to make offers on some of the junk....er... I mean next years Christmas presents.
 
People have had this same gripe about "holiday creep" since Coca Cola commercialized Santa Claus in the 1930s. It's not getting any earlier, it's just equally as annoying every year.
 
The local Sam's puts their xmas stuff out in early August!

It wouldn't be so bad except that it reduces the beer selection by at least 50%.

If you want a snapshot of our consumer driven society, look at Black Friday. Idiots killing each other (literally as there have been shootings and riots) over DVD players and blenders. Insane. Losers walking up at 3am to get to Walmart to save $50 on a TV. Or better yet, camping out in a tent in the parking lot 3 days early to get to the front of the line. And it's all bought on credit. Credit that tax payers ultimately end up paying for when they file for bankruptcy. The government lets the banks write off the loss, the shop-a-holics get a free pass and a new credit card within a few months to start all over again, and our tax dollars have to cover the shortfall. Great system.

The only stores I'll step foot in between November 1st and January 1st are grocery stores and liquor stores.
 
I can be Ebenezer Scrooge. I've disliked Christmas for 30+ years.

Sure, it is the second most important day of the Liturgical calendar (I'm Catholic), but other than going to mass the whole season is inconvenient and wasteful.

Damn. I just read that. Am I really only 50?

No kidding! I too was surprised to see some retarded sales monkeys put up Christmas decorations and items in August.
It really made me hate the whole 1/2-year Christmas season. And I used to enjoy the holiday. :(

Funny, those are all the things I don't like about Christmas. Plus the incessant Christmas music.

Thanksgiving had been my holiday of choice just because it was the day that the extended family all got together at mom's place for a feast but it did not have all of the hoopla of xmas with the gift giving, etc. Now that the extended family has grown to nearly 50 people, we need to rent a place to hold everyone if everyone shows up so I no longer care for Thanksgiving.

This is pretty much exactly what I have to do. I don't ever really want anything for Christmas (or birthdays), but when I do it's usually high-dollar and/or technical. I try to put in a small "necessities" request, but then get told it's too simple; things such as a few pairs of my favorite boxers (also not exactly "cheap") or socks. Thankfully, most have figured out to just give me cash or get me an Amazon and/or Sporty's gift card.
