China Airlines 747 overruns runway at SeaTac

Vis at SEA was down to less than 1/8mile earlier and it's snowing harder now.

we got 4-5 inches today started at 0900, and by noon we had 2" and now the wind are coming up. and blowing it around.

I heard 65 MPH in the Straights? You're just south of there... buckle down, stay safe.

It's settled down to clear, cold and calm. 23 Degrees

Minus 30°C here this morning. That's -22F. Wind chill of -46°C. Not many folks out for a walk, and vehicles are a little stiff. Wheel bearing grease gets rather tough.

I was in Seattle one time when it snowed they closed SEATAC for several hours and it was fun to watch drivers try to stay on the road.

People around here do not know how to drive in snow. What really hammered Seattle yesterday was the weather's impact on the roads. Snowing, temps around 32 degrees F and the roads were pretty good. Then the cold air from Canada (yeah, blame it on Canada) arrived and the temperature dropped 15 degrees in one hour. All that moisture on the roads turned into ice. Doesn't matter where you learned to drive, ice is bad juju on the road, just as it is on your wings in a C-172. From what I saw on the news the roads were gridlocked. Not so bad in the Olympia area. Still plenty of snow and ice on the roads, but traffic still moves. Slowly. As in it took me about an hour to get into work after my optometrist appointment this morning. A drive that typically would have been less than 1/2 hour. 3 mph or so for several miles. Why? Best I could see was that it was due to a semi who stopped in the center lane as his chains were messed up. WSP came along and he moved to the side of the road just before I got there.

Thanks goodness for my Jeep. With good tires. And a driver who drives like there was a raw egg between his foot and the pedals.

And for clear weather. Cold, but clear. Going flying with the CFII after work. :D

Update - we didn't go flying. The airport didn't bother to plow the taxiways and getting the plane in and out of the hangar would not have been fun. We'll try again Sunday afternoon. There's a conspiracy preventing me from finishing learning to fly in clouds, and it's being run by the weather.

The OAT (according to the digital fever taker attached to the outside of the house) reads 2.4F. hehehehehe

Had to walk down to the garage earlier. Clear skies and a 'just past full' moon. Snow was crunchy and sparkley, It was just flippen beautiful out.

The one good thing about cold temps is that if your fridge is full and you have a 25 lb turkey that needs to be kept cool? You stick it in a soft sided cooler, then stick that into a hard side Coleman cooler and put the whole thing out on the back porch. If I had bought an extra one, I'd just stick it in a box on the porch, danged thing would be frozen solid by morning.

We saw that 747 on the ramp at SEA when we landed there Monday evening. I didn't know the story about it until later - just thought it was odd to see a 747 sitting out on the ramp from any sort of 'terminal' type building. We landed around 9pm local in what had to be 30+kt winds with vis of 1/2 - 1 mile in blowing snow. Snow plows were working like crazy to keep one of the runways open. They were still struggling to keep ONE runway open when we were finally able to depart around 1am local on what was supposed to be an 11:45pm departure.
