Shortly after this recurrent AD came out I discussed it with a noted cable manufacturer.His comment was the method used to manufacture them was at least partly to blame. One method is using dies and hammers that can result in stress cracking. The pic is from a 1965/140 that had been inspected previously. There are what may be “tooling marks” from the hammer process. I can’t prove it’s BAD but I sure can’t prove it’s GOOD!


The SM method of pulling the new cable with a string is “ no joy”. Anyone know if newer aircraft have better access to the pulley nut such as a belly panel?

You can install an inspection panel.. just saying
 
Duplicating a factory panel would be best if anyone has a pic.

Piper has a number of bulletins out on adding inspection panels perhaps look into those? Regardless, while Piper isn't as open as Cessna is on adding panels, a number will fall under a minor alteration depending on location.
