CFI reinstatement -what to focus on

After a 20 year break in flying I've decided to reinstate my CFI. I have it scheduled with an examiner August 1.

I did a reinstatement in the late 80's with the FAA & after the inspector saw my TT as an instructor, we had a brief oral exam, & then flew for 40 minutes or so with me in the right seat. It was very easy. I'm a little more intimidated this time since it's been 20 years & it's an examiner rather than the FAA.

I'll be taking the check ride in my newly acquired 182.

I guess my questions are two-fold. Will it be a big deal? What should I focus my study on?

I feel pretty current with airspace & parts 61 & 91.

Anyone here gone through this recently?

To answer your question, review the PTS. As an instructor, the examiners expect you to know the PTS like the back of your hand. Expect to provide instructional commentary to each maneuver you are asked to perform. Relax and good luck, it's a lot less stressful than a CFI initial.

I'd ask the DPE...most of the people I know who have reinstated got a pretty good idea of what to expect that way.

Beyond that, applicable PTS maneuvers.

If I were the DPE, I'd also focus on high performance airplane ops since that's what you're bringing for the ride...The Airplane Flying Handbook has a bit on that, but not much more than basics. Do you have an engine monitor in the airplane? I'd expect you to explain what you're looking at and looking for in various phases of flight, as well as what kind of engine problems you may detect with it. But that's just me, and I'm not the DPE. ;)
 
I reinstated my CFI a few years ago after a brief lapse. In doing so, I setup an appointment with the DPE a few weeks ahead of the ride to talk about his expectations, etc. Now, I've known this particular DPE for a long time, he did all of my checkrides other than my initial CFI, so that likely made him a bit more willing to meet with me. But I'd certainly ask.
 
Shoot.... In theory they could ask you to demonstrate 8's on pylons. I never could do those silly things.
 
I remember thinking after the oral "Now if I can just make it to the airplane without falling down" !

That. Why not get more out of your time and money and add something on?
 
Just a follow up. After a five hour oral exam & a 1.7 hr flight demonstrating commercial maneuvers I got it done. The examiner was tough but fair. After flying 2 hours to get there & back (each way)...I'm pooped.

It took the flight portion in my 182.

I'm glad I really hit the books the last couple of months. I studied subjects we never discussed but I felt weak in. Thats a good thing because after letting my CFI lapse 20 years ago I need a thorough refresher. Now back to my scotch.

Any new insights or special areas of emphasis by the FAA in recent CFI Reinstatement practicals since the original post 2 years ago? I’m an experienced “Gold Seal” CFI with all categories and classes but had a 15 year hiatus from flying. Done a recent eFIRC, 4-Wing Phases, among other courses and current on flying. Will be taking exam in a new Super Cub Technology Advanced Aircraft with Wipline 2100 float retractable gear, CS reversible prop, autopilot etc. Flying hiatus and aircraft choice due to life events so insights and special areas my focus for this request. Although successful completion of the Airplane single-engine CFI PTS reinstates all certificates held, and the reinstatement practical should be limited to that category and class, has anyone been asked questions about other categories or classes during the reinstatement?
