Just thought I would share this Garmin panel out there. Purchased the plane with most of it done, then added the GFC500 last month. Also added the GCO14 CO Detector and SmartGlide button.

I must say VNAV is the bees knees.

Using the G3x as the engine monitor is not something I have seen a lot of but I think it plays nicely with the rest of the system. Still learning how to customize which fields are visible at which times. Initially you couldn't see the CHTs and Fuel Flow at the same time, but during the autopilot install he changed that to always be visible.

My question for the community is, what is the best way to learn the avionics on a computer at home?

The Garmin trainer from what I can tell does the GTN650xi, but not the GFC 500.

Thanks,

Not really related to your question but why is your Performance Reference table in MPH while your G5 is in KT? Just curious... Assume the POH has MPH rather than KT. ASI looks to have MPH outer ring and KT inner ring.

Vx 73 mph → 63 kt
Vy 89 mph → 77 kt
Vg 80 mph → 70 kt
Va 126 mph → 110 knots

90 mph → 78 kt
110 mph → 96 kt

Nice setup!

The POH is in mph, the steam gauge is mph, and the G5 airspeed tape is in MPH, if you look closely just above where it shows GS in Knts, it has "MPH" for speed.

I wish I could move everything over to knots, its very annoying to have both all over the place. I am not sure of the procedure, I think I'd have to annotate every speed reference in the POH, and replace the airspeed indicator with a new one, then probably some sort of FSDO signoff.

I see the tape on G5 now. I only looked at the GS at lower left corner. Does the ASI have an inner gauge in KT? The only 182 I flown in had MPH in POH and various KT/MPH gauges drove me nuts as passenger right seat. I do recall asking about it and friend pointed out that his ASI had both MPH and KT - did cross check that way.

I did go down a rabbit hole on GFC 500... Might find of interest to you:

My dream 182 has the GFC 500.

Nice panel.

When I added the GFC 500, I bought the Garmin tutorial / e learning to help get me up to speed. Not a simulator, but I found it very helpful.

BTW - the G3 as an engine monitor is an interesting, "Cadillac" choice. Gives you excellent choice for an upgrade. By "just" adding another G3 in the future in the center panel you'll then have a full glass system. You can then pick and choose what data is shown on left or right screen, have a back up screen, all the while your G5's serve as your mandatory back up.

The G5 isn't really just a "backup", it is almost always set up as the driver for the GFC500.

In the middle now of complete panel overhaul with a G3X/G5/GFC500/GTN750xi install on our bird.

Ah - I had seen a video where Garmin installed a G5 and G3x on a Tiger. They shut down the G3x, and the G5 took over driving the AP. Skip to the 2:55 mark.

BTW - sounds like a great panel you're installing. What plane?

The G3X was never doing the work, only the G5. If the G5 goes off line, you'll lose the AP. The G5 is a much "simpler" instrument, and has it's own 4-hr battery, so the probability of the G5 having an issue is significantly less than the G3X (which is why Garmin designated the G5 as primary in a system with both).

Our install is on a C182Q ('77). Pretty much the only expense-spared has been not adding a separate engine monitor or MFD; relying on the G3X with a GEA24 for primary engine monitoring. There's been some interesting things about doing that we've learned in the process, but I'll save it for a separate thread.

You really want to get some transition training from a CFI that’s competent with yout new panel.

Tue Garmin Trainers can put a GTN on a G3X display, but there’s nothing similar for the GFC500.

Garmin does sell an online training module for the GFC500 and I took that a couple of months ago, and it’s fairly good. You can also travel to them and do a multi-day hands on course.

The flight school here has all GFC500s, but they've paired them with Avidyne GPS, so we are "learning together" the GTN/GFC combo.

Not necessarily. The G3X is capable of driving the GFC500 directly, and I'm almost positive that if it's set up correctly it'll take over from the G5 with nary a hiccup.
