Hello everyone,

I am a bit worried as I got accepted to University with a flight program which starts in the Spring. When I was 16 I underwent a cardiac ablation to cure my SVT, which was harmless and no restrictions were placed on me. I had two ablations as the first one wasn't successful. I forgot about them as I haven't had an SVT attack since, and I am extremely active and workout everyday.

I was wondering if this would block my chances of getting a second class medical quickly as I will need one by January 6th, and my medical is December 16th.

Thank you for the help!

It absolutely requires a special issuance. You better be talking to a good AME NOW. This is an AME-Assisted one which I think will bypass the long queue delays, but there are going to be certain tests the FAA is going to want to see before it can be issued. The good news is you're past the mandatory wait period.

The cardiologist at the FAA will give the final chop of this one and I suspect it will be favorable. But, you should have gotten your wish list to Santa much sooner!

Will it help that I have had a 24 hour Holter monitor and a ACG in the last year already?

Will it help that I have a a recent cardiologist appointment (just a 2 year check), an EVG, and a 24 Holter monitor test completed in the last year?

I know, it was a quick decision as I was pre-need in California and hated it as a sophomore, so I’m transferring to Florida. Needed to make the decision before I wasted another 100k.

One lesson you learn as a pilot is you need lots of patience. Consider this your first lesson. Contact one of the docs above, do everything they say, don’t argue if you think it unnecessary or dumb, remember this is your first lesson in patience. I think you will not have a problem if everything is ok and you can follow instructions. As for your deadline...... talk to the docs, don’t do the exam until you know you will pass, failing will make the process longer.

Can I DM these people? I don’t see anywhere I can get ahold of them.

Click how to start, and make contact with Dr Bruce before starting any medical tests. He will know exactly what tests will be needed and in what order. Please, do this before spending money on tests that may not help you.

Basic Med.

Dad had it done and was flying within the month.

Well unless you are a demonstrable revenue aviator, even if you had everything you needed RIGHT now, the won't get to it until about mid January.

Current: Echo, holter or Ziopatch, Evaluation by a board certified cardiologist and better if an electrophysiologist. You've only got 44 days. This late in the "My deductible is satisfied, can we get this done by Dec 31?" period, I can't imagine your getting into such a specialist.

Past: record of both ablations, both admission notes, both discharge summaries, and of all rhythm monitors and of all ER visits (the REAL medical record, not a My_chart).

If you have a letter of employment contingent on possession of a medical, a good AME can call it in.....but without definitely showing as a "revenue aviator" you takes your turn in the evaluation queue like everyone else. And they are NOT fast.

Thank you very much for your reply. It sounds as if I will not be able to fly until summer, or fall semester. That is okay. I am just lost on whether I should still go to my AME this December or wait.

I may be misunderstanding things, but if do not currently have your PPL and are just starting your training, is a medical required to ENROLL in the program? If not, you can certainly start your training without a medical, you just won't be able to solo or log PIC. You can still begin flight lessons. Obviously, it wouldn't make sense to do so unless getting a medical was ASSURED in the future, but you've heard from the two most respected docs in the business and they seem very optimistic about your path. You can fly with an instructor anytime you wish... medical or no medical.
