CA-6Y9 Northern route

My advice isn't with routing... My advice is, take the plane to 9,500 (or better yet, 11,500). See how long it takes to get there, how fast (or not) you're going when you get there (TAS), and what your climb rate is when you get there. Oh, and how much fuel it takes you to get there! Then, with all that in mind, figure out what your range will be with a 30-knot headwind, and see if there's actually airports close enough together along your route to make fuel stops.
Great minds think alike. Finding fuel stops is actually become the hardest part.

And then, decide to take the Comanche.
Another plane has entered the picture. M20B with GMN 250 moving map and powerflow exhaust. Loooking at dry lease for $44/hr.

I think the greater challenge will be convincing yourself to sit in a C150 seat for the gazillion-odd hours the trip is going to take. Talk about butthurt... :yikes:
Oh shudder! Just HOW did those other pilots even do this? I think we've grown too soft.

Last night I came up with a routing but now I haven't been able to find it. Basically Rawlings to 6Y9.

your best route is to follow the I-15 out of So-Cal to Utah. and cross the Rockies almost anywhere in southern Utah. direct Rock Springs and east.

Richard - come pick me up! I've done that exact trip a few times (granted, not in a 152) and I'm pretty familiar with the airports along the way....

Yes, do!
That way Felix and I can ride in the Diz's trunk again!!

Felix, you serious? I will ya know. Now I'm leaning towards the Mooney. I had forgotten just how underwhelming the Mighty Onefiddytwo is. I still haven't gotten the infor which model 152 this is. Makes a big diff.

The Commanche is a long shot at this point. I wouldn't want to show up Ed with STUNNING good looks at his home field.

Sure, why not.

Awwwww. Come on... If I could fly from Detroit to Fairbanks (and back) in a Cessna 120 (with my brother), you ought to be able to make it any model 150/152 with all it's extra speed and room!

Did we do that? I completely forgot! Must have been after enjoying some vodka
One does not enjoy vodka as much as come away feeling assualted.

You would have to change locations for the 2 or 3 days prior to the pick up. I'm allergic to pretty much all things Marin.

You hate Marin? That might be a problem!!!!

Well, having flown that route to Oshkosh about 35 times in a C-120, C-170, C-172, and lately in the blueonblue 182, here's my route from near Sacramento to near Oshkosh.

Over the Sierra at Donner Summit (I-80), through the Verdi Gap into Reno, up to Lovelock, shoot the dogleg on V32 north of Mt. Tobin into Battle Mountain, then a straight shot across the railroad yards in Carlin to Elko, and now a choice.

South around around the Lake direct Wendover, direct Toelle, direct South Valley, vectors around the east side of Salt Lake International to Weber Canyon, thence direct Morgan County for fuel.

Or north to Wells, Lucin, across the center of the Lake to Promontory Point, vectors to Weber Canyon, thence direct Morgan County for fuel.

Pick up the 8-lane out of Morgan County and follow it to the junction of I-80 at Echo, then follow I-80 into Evanston. Evanston, Ft. Bridger, Rock Springs, Rawlins and you are done for the day. France Flying Service in Rawlins are good people, plus a couple of courtesy cars, plus a motel right at the bottom of the hill plus three or four good eateries within spitting distance.

EARLY next morning (daybreak if you can) Rawlins direct Medicine Bow. Halfway between the two you will see the hamlet of Hanna; a mile south of Hanna there is a dragstrip with what looks like a large hangar at the east end. Directly over Hanna, the 182 decided it no longer wanted the #3 cylinder on the engine and barfed it off along with most of the oil coming home from Oshkosh 2004. Doing a field service on a dirt dragstrip in a tin shed out in the middle of the godforsaken boonies with a new jug, a big screwdriver, and a crescent wrench was a character building experience.

Anyway, Medicine Bow directly over Wheatland Reservoir keeps paved roads underneath you until you can take a straight shot for Torrington. At Torrington you've got another decision to make. If the thunderstorms in the plains are north, you go south and vice versa.

North up to Alliance, Ainsworth, O'Neill, Sioux City, Fort Dodge and then by whatever route is straightest to your destination.

South to Scottsbluff, Garden County (Oshkosh, the other one), North Platte, Grand Island, Lincoln, Omaha, Des Moines, and then by whatever route is straightest to your destination.

Enjoy the flight. Just for the heck of it, what is at 6Y9? It is a grass strip out in the middle of East Nowhere Michigan.

It's not what, it's who! This is EdFred's family's airport that they reopened after Michigan closed it, and there's an annual Labor Day flyin. Check out the 6Y9 Flyin sub-thread under Cool Places to Fly.

Look at the top of your screen (as in, right now). See the Pilots of America logo in the upper left? Now look to the right of that. There is a count down to the 6Y9 Fly-In. It is so mega important that they put it at the top of every page.

Pretty cool for a grass strip 70 miles from the nearest stop light.

Only 18 days left, I am very excited. I am flying commercially most of the way via the airlines, but still it will be a fun time.

I looked, but it's not there! ;) ;) ;)
