I just got off the phone with a friend who lives in North Dakota.
She said that since early this morning the snow has been nearly waist high and is still falling. The temperature is 32 below zero and the north wind is increasing to near gale force. Wind chill is –59!
Her husband has done nothing but look through the kitchen window and just stare.
She said that if it gets much worse, she may just have to let the drunk bastard in...."
 
And Minnesota's governor canceled school statewide tomorrow...wonder how long it's been since that last happened...if ever.
 
this cold spell is killing me....been 72-78 for 2 weeks now. Summer can't come soon enough:yes:

I live in the Sunshine state and love it. It's nice and warm here right now. Many of my friends and co-workers say they could never live here, they love the change of seasons too much to ever leave!

How is that change working out for you northerners?

Yes you guessed right, I have ZERO sympathy

As a side note, my longtime coach (I was a professional athlete) said, "Anyone who lives in a cold climate is a victim of circumstance, no one would do it by choice".

I agree.

ps: I don't own a coat

The cold doesn’t bother me; it’s the damn Santa Anas blowing the c150 backwards.

I flew home from Big Bear Christmas eve, had a 30kt tailwind, my ground speed was 144mph in my stinson:yikes:
 
I'm Southeast of Chicago, and we've been getting hit pretty hard, but the coldest is yet to come!

No sympathy needed or asked for here. I was down South, and I came back. Not only voluntarily, I searched for the possibility.

I'll still choose this over Florida any day of the year.

I grew up in Puerto Rico. Did my undergrad in the Southeast (GA and AL). Did my penitence in Indiana during 2.5 years of grad school. I survived the winters and but it wasn't enjoyable in the least; it was laborious and angering at times. Granted, the Dakotas and Minnesota are colder and never did argue otherwise while in Indiana.

I'm now back in the south and enjoying the mild winters. I don't need it to be Puerto Rico warm in order to not upset me, but that business going on in North Dakota right now would cure me from ever wanting to entertain continental weather by choice.

I suppose people who grew up in that kind of cold weather continue to do so because there are family ties and other socio-cultural reasons?? I just can't see what aspect of enduring that kind of frigidity is actually physically pleasant. I would like for people who grew up in cold weather explain me what their motivation is. I left the islands because of economic reasons, so I've too put my money where my mouth is when it comes to making less desirable weather choices under economic duress. But North Dakota is just way outta control, money be damned. Part-year living in the summer? sure. right now? no way.

What say you?
 
I live up here for economic reasons, namely that this is where I have a job. In today's market, and at my age, that's not something I'd give up easily.

Though for bloody sure, I'd move away from this awful weather in a heartbeat, if I could.

I LOVE the white stuff....:yes: Cold doesn't really bother me till it gets down to -35f or so.... Then ya just stay inside and feed the woodstove..

I have a LP powered generator, 1000 gallon tank :goofy:

Btw, no hurricanes here in 10 years, I think global warming has helped ;)

Ben, your backyard view is better than mine, I look at a 10,000 acre nature preserve, cypress hammocks, wetlands, pines, lots of varied animal life.

You win the visual contest by miles, I love the mountains! But I grew up in the snowbelt in NE Ohio, I hate snow and cold.

Now where did I put my fly rod? I think I'll go fishing :yes:

Can't get NG where I live, it would have been a better choice. I built the house and looked at all my alternatives.
 
You can always put more layers on to stay warm, you can only take so many off to stay cool, and there's a whole lot of people I'd rather see with layers on than layers off.. I've been in Florida and Arizona in August. No thanks.

BTW.. I spend many days at PBIR /Moroso raceway back 30 years ago... The Loxahatchee area is a pretty kool area to live in too.... I assume PBG = Palm Beach Gardens ?:dunno:..

I love all of the seasons, and winter is included.

I grew up with harsh winters, and came to love it. Sure it gets cold, but bundle up, and you'll be fine. You learn to adapt to it, and enjoy it if you want to.

Snowmobiling, skiing, ice-fishing, sled-riding, the beauty of a crisp, white day with the sun gleaming off the snow, curled up next to a fire on a cold winter evening...fantastic!

Does it suck having to shovel snow, chip ice, or having to be quick with your movements from the car to the building in business attire? Sure, sometimes. But the positives for me outweigh the negatives. I had a very difficult time with Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years at 50F+. And football without the cold, blowing wind, spitting snow? No thanks! Bring the SEC up north, let's see how they handle it.

Just as EdFred said, you can always put more layers on, but you can only take so many off. At 80F+, I begin to become very uncomfortable, exponentially so as the humidity also increases.

Given the choice, I'll take below zero over 90F+ with 90%+ humidity any day of the year. You can have your heat, humidity, hurricanes, and retirees!

Yeah you did. Wind chill this morning was right around -50F. Just for giggles I checked the ASOS, density altitude was -4600. Field elevation is 950.

Dealing with the cold is the least of it for me. In fact I like hiking in cold weather, and have no problem bundling up. But driving in it, especially driving to work the morning after a big snowstorm, when the community I live in doesn't do any salting, nor any plowing to speak of, is an ordeal I really don't want to go through more than once a year. I've already driven to the airport three times this winter in treacherous conditions to beat the plows piling the snow up against my hangar door. The third time I was too late. All three times I was glad just to get back home alive. I've given up at this point, it's not worth it.

Luckily today the University declared a snow day. Bully for them. If they hadn't I would have had to use the public transportation (about 2 hours each way). My car is not moving until they plow the driveway at my condo (which MIGHT happen sometime overnight tonight) and then can borrow a snowblower to clear the 3-foot pile the plows leave across the entrance to my carport.

AFAIC they have the right attitude in Quebec: F*** la merde blanche. :mad:
 
Get a 4WD with clearance. I never rely on the county to plow - and when they haven't, I've never been stuck.

Well Jackson Hole is a bit different I think. The Natural Beauty of the area is simply stunning. Enough to make even a Floridian like me consider living there part of the time even in winter. Unfortunately there are lots of other places up north that simply don't have enough for me to even consider a move. I'm sure there are nice places in North Dakota, but I think I'll just visit as I have in the past.

That's spelled JEEP. Of course once you get hooked on the beasts you'll learn that JEEP means Just Empty Every Pocket. Boy does my Wrangler drink gas. :D

And that's exactly why I drive a Sonic instead of an SUV... but I have to admit, in weather like this, the SUV would be the better choice.

I was considering a 4WD at one point (Subaru Forester), but thought better of it. Buyer's remorse isn't worth it though...

Anyway they finally plowed our driveway this afternoon, now comes the task of clearing the carport entrance. :(

Probably making the kids walk 5 miles to school in that weather, just so they will have a story to tell THEIR kids when they start complaining about having to walk to school....
