Bonanza Explodes in Midair over Colorado

From the looks of all the oil coating the belly and running /dripping down the fuselage back by the VOR antenna... I would guess it did blow the motor at some point in the flight /descent....

The preliminary report didn't say whether all the wreckage was accounted for at the impact site. Guess that goes in the factual report and not the prelim.

Just trying to figure out why the word "explodes" was used in the description of this and whether that is backed up by the plane's having 'come from together' in mid-air and ending up with parts scattered about.

Iced up, non-instrument rated, hypoxia, lost control in IMC, and broke up? A few possibilities. Sad. RIP.

That's what I'm wondering, too. From the pictures, it looks like it crashed and got a bit crunched up is all.

I think most of it ended up in one spot, but early reports said the wreckage was scattered over a half a mile. It was probably shedding parts before the main portion of the wreckage hit.

Seems to me like it may have been hypoxia and a date with Vne. But of course that's just speculation and we'll wait for the experts.

Even an engine-out with an unconscious pilot in a trimmed airplane should not reach Vne, right? The trim should prevent it from getting that fast I would think... unless the pilot slumped over onto the controls -- especially with the engine at full power. That would make it come apart.

But yeah... hypoxia or other pilot incapacitation seems plausible.

A bonanza will enter a graveyard spiral if properly trimmed and no wing leveler.
