Bomardier C series

They built a 737.

Congrats? Hmmmm, at least it wasn't from China.

At least it's not a CRJ-1100.

Yes Congrats - to design a new aircraft from a clean sheet and have FF within 5 years - yes !!! Remember, this is a totally new type of aircraft for them.

The China one (COMAC) was delayed again, FF in 2015 and customers 2016.

Both COMAC and Bombardier started in 2008 on these projects and yesterday was a major milestone for them.

I was taking to someone who was on the flight line at the time of take-off and he commented how quiet those P&W engines were.

Congrats to their whole team.

Just what the world needs. A bigger "regional jet" to be flown at subpar wages.

Oh I'm sure they didn't buy a 737 and take it apart. Yeah - they started with a sharp pencil and a fresh sheet of paper.

Sure they did.

Sure, yah.

Sure, eh.

COMAC probably did but I know Bombardier was designed from scratch.

It was completely clean-sheet and the first plane to fly with the new Geared Turbo Fan engines from Pratt. It is very, very efficient, and very, very quiet. It will have much better operating economics than the 737Max or A320neo as well. Time will tell if it ever gets any traction in the market though...so far there are <200 firm orders despite the economic advantages. I expect a rash of new orders after it gets some more hours behind it and enough confidence that it will deliver in a year or so vs. the years of delays typical of Boeing and Airbus.

I think the CS300 will be the winner for them.

Likely so. I hope they go ahead and get into the 150+ seat market as well and wonder why they didn't start there. The new 737 and A320 models are all north of there and that seems to be what the market wants since sales of the small versions of those planes are extremely low.

The problem with the small versions of the 737 and A320 is that they are just shrunken down versions of big planes. This plane was built to be the size it is, and thus it is more fuel efficient, quieter, and in my opinion it is also sleeker.

Having looked at the pictures it doesn't look like a retooled 737 at all (well no more than most commercial jets looking like every other commercial jets), and I am particularly impressed with the flight deck... but I always love shiny new things.

I'm afraid that with those plastic wings and geared engines this new Bombardier is going to beat the pants off the upcoming SSJ-100 stretches. SSJ-100 is built using the traditional techniques and uses a fairly conventional jet Sam-146e with an ordinary bypass ratio. It is also going to go head to head with EMB-170 and its derivatives.

Comparisons with 737 miss the point by a mile. Maybe a nautical mile.
