the tradition is that it's only the shirt-tail but it ends up being the back

I wish I still had mine. When I became an instructor I hated the shirt tail tradition. I can't draw worth a crap.

Not sure I sill have it but my CFI drew out the runway with some artwork on one of the school's T-Shirts then had the whole flight school sign it like a yearbook...that was pretty fun.

When I got done with my solo, my CFI said..."want me to cut the tail of your shirt?"..."nope"..."didn't think so!"

Never had a solo shirt ritual, you know I'm old.

At the club pretty much all of them are name, date, plane, hours to solo, and a comment from the cfi. Kinda boring but nice to see them all hanging up. Its cool to see where you fall in among other people. Seemed like 25% are at 8 hours 65% at 15 and 10% beyond 40. I'll have to grab a picture next time i'm there.

I gave my CFI a set of ping pong paddles painted to look like the ones a LSO on a carrier would use. And a set of instructions on how to use them.

The shirts at my current school are quite artistic. My CFI wasn't exactly an artist, so mine is nothing special (except to me). It was actually my favorite shirt. I wasn't aware of the tradition, or that I was going to solo.

Wow....I'm not that artistic...I just include the stats on the Solo Shirt Tail.

The story behind the cut shirt is pretty cool.

It goes back into the early days of aviation where the engines would spit oil into the pilot's face throughout the flight. He would use his scarf to wipe the oil from his goggles so that he could see. The cutting of the shirt tail was supposed to signify that a new pilot was present and that he would now have his own scarf to wipe the oil from his own goggles.

I will cut your shirt whether you like it or not.

I kept my shirt back though.
Do most people leave them with the CFI?

I see comments about them hanging up.

I have mine. My wife had it framed (along with a solo certificate my CFI/Dad made for me on his computer). Pretty cool reminder of that day and I see it every time I walk though my house.

can you post or send a pic.
I always planned on putting something together that displayed the shirt and a couple photos but I am only creative in text. I don't know how to make a cool wall hanging that contains that stuff

I'm traveling for work this week, but will take/post a photo when I get back. If it makes s difference, she took it to a framing place and they did the creative stuff. But she had the idea and followed through, which is why I get to see it most every day vs "Yeah, I think I have that somewhere. Maybe in one of the boxes in the basement?"

Mrs 6PC and I just looked for mine and were both like " I am sure we have seen it in this drawer, etc..."

My favorite solo shirt!

And my second favorite solo shirt!

Not sure if this will work from my phone, but here's a photo my wife took of it for me this morning. (If it doesn't work I'll fix it once I'm back home.)
