Just browsing around, and I noticed some "bargains" on planes under $40k. Seems like they are out there if somebody wants them.

I would never regard a 172 or a Cherokee (other than a 6 or a 235/Pathfinder/Dakota) as a "4-place" airplane, based upon useful load.

Yeah good point. I was thinking a plane that I'd buy myself for largely me flying and maybe 2 other adults every so often. True 4 place planes are real tough to come by under 40k.

I'm not sure what "4 place" means with the 2015 size of average people.

I would guess most "4 place" trips are either Dad+Mom+Kid+Kid or "4 Men Golf Buddies".


If you need 4 places for Dad, Mom, Kid, and Kid, that is a different equation than a 4 place for Golfer, Golfer, Golfer, and Golfer, plus clubs.

Get a nice Tri pacer with the 150 hp motor. Good fabric and you'll have an aircraft with a faster cruise than a 172.

Might be a stretch but I wouldn't rule it out. I paid a little over $50k for my 172N 180hp. A higher time model with fewer upgrades might get in the ballpark.

I would hope that's always the case. Any plane that lets you both fill the seats and fill the tanks, is a poor design. It needs more tanks or more seats.

The heat and sun are downright brutal. Plastic, paint (and I suspect fabric as well) do not fair well outside/uncovered.

The Phoenix area is a great place to park a bare aluminum airplane though.

Haven't all 60 year old retracts slid in on their belly a time or two??

Do the vtailed planes have a chunk of ballast in the rear to help balance them out? I've heard they also get a weird oscillation in certain wind directions.
