Beech C23 fatal crash near Spartanburg, SC

Was this too slow and then stalled into the ground?

Definitely wasn’t a stable approach.
 
That's about 5.3 miles from GSP airport. Wonder if they had engine issues and were trying to land on hwy 101 or one of the fields there.
 
Looks like they may have wanted in into that field and were hellbent on doing so. There must have been no perceived better alternatives. RIP
 
The pilot, Dan Witt, was a member of the Beech Aero Club. I just posted on the BAC website to see if anyone might have more info.
