Some of us are planning on flying to Beaumont, KS tomorrow for brunch/early lunch tomorrow. Looks like Tony is going, maybe Barb will fly with me, and hopefully Kim will be going too. Anyone else care to join us?
 
Too damfar. How about I fly up to Cedar Mills Marina and we talk on the cellphone while we eat?

We're bringing some folks from Kansas City. My former CFI, Gene Linder, and his wife are flying down. We have invited the Bailey's, too. Phil has asked two other people as well, but no word yet on whether or not they're coming.....

Should be fun. :yes:
 
Is Gene the guy guy who had the L-2? or who was a master welder? That's a familiar name from my KC days.

Master welder and L-2 owner and my buddy....he's 77 and still flies his 3 airplanes from his private field, Cowchip, in Paola, KS. He's still feisty.....:yes:

Well, if you aren't bringing anyone else, can I just ride with you? I promise not to touch any knobs, levers, or gadgets and won't comment about your landings. :no: :D
 
Wasn't he west of Louisburg on a private strip close to the cider mill for a while? or was that somebody else? Gene showed me how to rebuild the old (leaky) fuel tanks in my L-2 many moons ago. The same L-2 is now rebuilt again (this time profesionally) and waiting (hoping) for engine STC that may never happen.

He has completely rebuilt two airplanes (one of them I crashed :redface:) since I've known him. He is still in the same place, by the cider mill. :yes:
 
I had a Vagabond and one of the guys Rick ? had a Cessna 140. We used to fly to Gene's strip to play.

I had to look that up...thought it might have been a cow part. :D The cows like her singing, but the bull seems quite indifferent. He ain't got no class.

well i taped up the canopy on the flybaby, and threw a space heater in the cowling. so hopefully itll be nice and warm in the morning. just need to load it with gas and hop in. im wheels up at 7 AM for planned 7.5 hrs of flight time in a 10 hr day. should be able to make it home about a half hour before sunset. looking forward to a great lunch!

Just heard from Tony C. and Diana....Diana is home safe and sound but running out the door on an errand. She'll post pictures later.

Tony made it as far as Winterset.....I'll let him tell the story....he just flat ran out of daylight I suppose....and I'll bet he's a little chilly. His friend Matt is coming to get him.

That Tony is something. It was great to see him today!

It was great to see Diana and Tim, too! Tim, I enjoyed meeting you. Plus, Tony Scarpelli, of Red Board crankiness fame, flew 11 minutes from Augusta to join us. Gene and Virginia made it, too. A good time was had by all....Beaumont is the cutest little place I've ever seen. I'm sure this was the first of many trips we'll make there.....:thumbsup:
 
i had a blast. logged 8.5 or so today. marginal weather on departure, trip from ames to gardner was all at or below 2,500 MSL. pilotage the whole way. got easy Class D transitions from St. Joseph and New Century. I landed as Kim and Phil were taking the bird dog down to get gas. I fueled up as well and we hit the air for beaumont. I started out ahead of them and they landed before me. Great lunch and good company. Wish I could've stayed longer. What a trip taxiing up the street to the hotel!

I screamed back to Gardner. Climbed up to 7500 MSL and was making groundspeeds in the 90-100 knot range. completed the trip in an hour. fltplan.com had told me that 7500 would be good for the trip back to ames too so after fueling i took off, got class D transition from New Century, and started climbing to the NW. Stayed just outside the class D, initially at 6500, then 7500 after turning back NE. The tailwinds were not as advertised. in fact, i think they had turned on me. 60-70 knot groundspeeds were what i was calculating and the fuel game was not computing. Finally after a 60ish knot run in NW Missouri I threw in the towel, turned 90 deg. left, and headed for maryville.

frantically searched through the A/FD and decided to land at Rankin, it said they had gas. The runway is about 20 feet wide!!! and it turns out thanks to city politics they dont have gas. the old guy was kind enough to prop me and back up i was in the air over to maryville muni. 4.30 for 100LL and I was off at 4:10 PM.

sunset is 5 PM. I had called Matt Michael and he was driving south. I decided to stay low and out of the wind, so I cruised around 2000-2500. I was seeing 80 knot groundspeeds now!! Quick work with the whiz wheel and plotter and I figured I could make Winterset. so i did. and now im thawing out and waiting for matt to get here.

i got a few pictures, will post them when i have time. Had a great day today, was nice seeing everyone!
 
Photos from today...not too many of people, since the women won't let me take their photo and the guys don't really care about photos, I just took pics of the planes!

There's a pretty good one of Tony in front of the hotel taxiing out for departure.

The gray pacer wasn't with us but it was just a pretty little plane that I had to get a picture of.

It was great to meet everyone...even Tony's 30 minute visit! ;)

Well, it looks like you got a cute shot of Virginia Linder next to their Citabria.....

Now, Diana and I only take pictures of people or people WITH their airplanes....we're just pretty darn picky about which pictures of us show up on the internet.....:yesnod:

Wayne, I was actually going to call you and give you a hard time while we were all together at lunch, but I had NO cell coverage in Beaumont....dangit!

It's quite unique, isn't it. :D

It was great meeting Gene and Virginia....what a fun couple. :yes: We need to fly up there and land at their strip and spend time visiting with them.

Tim and I flew over Barb's on the way home and looked for the bull, but didn't see him. ;)

Tom had our good camera, but I got a few shots with my iPhone. Is that FlyBaby enchanting, or what?!?! Tony is also rather photogenic. :)

Ha! Tony is going to have so many pics of him with 48ML on the internet that if Matt ever gets to fly it, people will say "Oh, cool. You're flying Tony's plane!"

Thanks for the ride today!

Right after you left a few friends flew in to visit. Bruce in his Citabria and Mike in his Cessna 140. It was a great day of flying and visiting with good people. :yes:

Yeah, I heard them when I was...ohhh...probably 15 to 20 minutes gone.

rather photogenic, in the 'please god get me out of this freezing cold cramped uncomfortable airplane after 4 hrs' way.
