Beard oil and oxygen

I think the anti beard O2 stuff is from here:
https://www.faa.gov/documentLibrary/media/Advisory_Circular/AC120-43.pdf

more than any desire for the airlines wanting their pilots to look a certain way.

Define beard

Are we talking a tight clean beard or someone who basically has face dreadlocks?

I tested it a good bit with a on demand and my clean and tight beard and had no noticeable issue.

The AC doesn’t even define what they mean by beard, methods of testing, etc.

Maybe go to a cannula vs. a mask?

Point: In the scuba world, you encounter the occasional Bearded Scuba Dude Man. It doesn't matter how much oil BSDM puts on his 'stach, a normal face mask isn't going to work. So, after oiling himself up, BSDM is going to put a goggle style mask on, prior to strapping on his various weights and chains.

I've heard from one professional diver he uses a food-grade silicone gel in his beard when he dives to get a good seal. Just rubs it in his beard before putting the mask on.

I dove one time with my beard, to scrub a boat hull. I very quickly abandoned the scuba gear and finished the boat by free diving, It didn't seal at all.

SCUBA diving with goggles isn't going to work so well. But I've dived many times with a moustache using food-grade silicone. No big issue. Masks leak some, with or without facial hair.

Those of us with beards were required to shave them off, once we were expected to possibly be in hazardous atmospheres on occasion at work. So that SCBA masks were 100% (nearly) sealed.

At one time, we were allowed to carry a razor with which to shave off the interfering portion of the beard before donning the mask. But that changed.

There were graphic representations of what beards were allowed... Some were "odd."
Imagine hair, anywhere and everywhere not red in this graphic.

Wasn’t Hitler’s mustache the way it was because of getting a seal on a mask?

I was just reminded of this thread...

I am plagued with fingers that crack off the corners of the nails when the weather is cold. They hurt like hell because of number of fingertip nerves and their proximity to the skin surface.

The remedy?

Proactive: Use Udder Balm or DuraVet's DuraCream lotion to keep hands/fingers moist. They both work well but must be applied multiple times / day to be fully effective...thick lotions with lanolin, aloe vera and vitamins.

Reactive: Superglue the cracks back together! That also works well...for a day or two 'til the crack reopens.

And just what the hell does this have to do with Kent's thread?

I used to use beard balm/cream on my beard (I typically only grow one in the winter...and not always then even).

But...

...I have found that it's simpler and easier to...

...as I'm finishing up getting cleaned up in the morning, the last thing I always do is put lotion on my hands / fingers. When the lotion is just shy of being fully absorbed I wipe my hands downward on my beard and mustache. That immediately tames all whiskers that are flying astray and heading in the wrong direction, plus I assume the moisturizing nature of the lotion is good for my face also.

And it's a hella lot quicker than pulling out the tub of beard balm that I have.

FWIW...
