I am planning to stop for the night in Memphis on an upcoming flight and would like some recommendations for BBQ in the world capitol of BBQ.
Also thoughts of which airport is the most suitable.

Thanks!

Airport: Dewitt-Spain. End of discussion.

BBQ: Cozy Corner is good. Central BBQ is decent.

DeWitt-Spain (M01) is an AMAZING little airport. The staff is super friendly and cheap gas. Uber from there to downtown is only about $10 and 10 minutes. My wife and I stop there on our way to/from Florida when it makes sense.

As far as BBQ, we've tried (in the order of our preference):

1) Central BBQ (very, very good)
2) Blue's City Cafe

5) Charlie Vergo's Rendevous (was not impressed at all)

Last time I saw Dewitt from the air the entire airport was flooded to the roof tops!

But they are proud of their BBQ there. It's good, but I've had better. Bamma BBQ baby! :D

General Dewitt Spain airport or West Memphis are both convenient to downtown. I think there are POA folks at both places. Dewitt Spain is right along the river so it's kind of cool.

I love dry rub ribs so I would go to The Rendezvous for ribs. A lot of people don't like them or complain about their price but if you haven't been there you should go. Topps (my last couple of experiences haven't been as good) and Interstate BBQ are my favorites and Leonard's is less popular but I like it. For a real inner city experience, go to a Showboats (if they're still around). But be careful.

Don't go to Corky's, it's terrible.

We had just moved to the area, living near Germantown and was flying out of KOLV when that flood happened. After a year we moved to midtown and I started flying out of M01. Great people indeed.

When I was there for the NCAA Regionals a couple years ago we went to Central BBQ (Downtown). It was okay.. if you like Pork.

Gus's World Famous Friend Chicken was a more interesting choice for our group.

Yeah I was doing 3 day trips outa MEM there one summer. Guess that flood was 7-10 years ago. Even the casinos were along the MS R. were flooded around them. Hopefully they had enough sense to elevate the building enough to prevent flooding. But the parking lots were flooded.

If ya fly into MEM they have, or had, a couple of Rendezvous there, and a Interstate too I think. But since Delta pulled out I wouldn't be surprised if many of the eateries have closed shop.

Gus's is a great choice. It'll take some years off your life but it's worth it.

So Dewitt-Spain for the airport. Gus's chicken...how spicy is spicy?

On the topic of beer, Wiseacre is local and makes some great stuff. Not sure what their tour schedule is like but if you see it on a menu, go for it. I've yet to find a bad brew from them.

+1 for Blues City Cafe. DeWitt Spain is a nice airport, it's where I bought my Starduster (RIP).

Central or Interstate for BBQ. And the previous suggestions for DeWitt Spain or West Memphis are good ones.

If you have time and are so inclined, Bass Pro has a nice facility in the Pyramid downtown. Enjoy the visit!

My daughter and I visited Memphis/Dewitt Spain this past winter. I'm not one to normally take trips for any sort of retail shopping, but that Bass Pro is the bomb!

Have you tried Chuck Wagon in HSV?

Haven't heard of it. Think the only BBQ I had in HSV was a place downtown, close to a hospital I think. Must've been ok but not enough to create a memory lol. Still have to get to Gibson's in Decatur. Ever been there, and is it as good as everyone claims?

If you are looking for other attractions to see in Memphis, I'd recommend The Cotton Museum.

It's actually pretty interesting and not offensive in the least.
HA! Not offensive? What are you, a cave man? Get with the times you old dinosaur, people are hurt and wounded by such callous displays of white privilege!

I've been there, the food was very good. Once I get my medical back, I'll be going back. Hopefully without the monster xwind we had to land in last time. :yikes:

No, not the one in decatur, but I'd like to. Have eaten at one or two in huntsville (I understand there are two brothers, each with their own restaurant) so, I can't say for sure which one is which.

Chuck Wagon does Texas Style bbq, although they have tomato based sauces available (very good).

As likely to see flight suits as three piece suits. And the line is out the door before they open. Good stuff if you like that style.

plenty of good BBQ in Memphis, all the recommendations above are good! If you really wanted to be touristy and see beale street (youll do it once and basically be over it) Blues City is good and is literally right on beale street

definitely stop by the bass pro, one of these days im just going to get myself a room in the hotel inside that pyramid it's awesome, definitely stop in

For those mentioning the Chuck Wagon in HSV, Love that place. at my previous airline we stayed right near it and I would always go, if it was open, they always had weird hours.

Still my favorite BBQ I've ever had is Southern Soul in St. Simons Island, GA (KSSI) (basically Brunswick, GA) its like a 2 block walk from the airport.

Also as far as airports go I spend a lot of time in Memphis, but I've only flown my airplane in once, and I flew right into KMEM and parked at Wilson Air, they treated me very very well for being a single prop guy, price was reasonable at $15 a night. I had a good experience and If i were to fly my plane in again I'd probably go right back to them
