Is their a link to get the Comprehensive Medical Examination Checklist to be used by a state-licensed physician. Has AOPA finished the BasicMed medical education course.

No to both, and I just read in a reply on the Cardinal Flyers Online list that according to AOPA, the FAA has decided to roll out the checklist right on May 1 and not a day earlier. Since you have to have done the exam before submitting the documentation along with the education course, it wouldn't make sense for AOPA to deploy their online course before that date, either.

I haven't yet checked the AOPA site to confirm this, however.
 
You may want to read the recent editorial in Plane & Pilot about BasicMed. Not very complimentary.

I just read it and am not sure if I agree with the points he makes--he says he pays $100 for a 3rd class medical and he would need to pay his primary doc $150. Well, I pay $130 for a 3rd class and $0 for a physical with my primary doc, thanks to Obamacare. Since the Basic Med will be good for 4 years the way I see it, that saves me $260 vs a 3rd class medical.

Really? How do they know when the form is coming out? Do they have a contact within OMB?

"May 1st shalt be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be May 1st. May 2nd shalt thou not count, nor either count thou April 30th, excepting that thou then proceed to May 1st..."
 
Will be cheaper for me I have an annual physical anyway that is "free". I have an si for sleep apnea so currently need to do the physical before the ame anyway and send thw ame money on the off years to process it.
 
My GP will do the physical for probably $100 cash. I have to see her at least twice a year anyway. I forget what Dr. Bruce charged me for my last couple of class 3's, but he's worth more than he charges. It is a little bit of a hassle to travel up to Peoria from Austin, but worth it if you have sleep apnea (since cured) and/or an interesting motorcycle accident.

My physical runs out in July. I have a pretty strong lead to fly jumpers at a nearby airport if I ever get a class 2. That might be fun. But probably I'll just do the Basic med this time.

Of course obamacare increased my premiums by $5000 per year (for worse coverage). The way I see it that is a net increase of $19,740 every 4 years.
 
I have a doctor's appointment on May 1st 8:25am Central time... I hope to have that form in hand at that regularly scheduled appointment. I will have all my blood work done on the 24th, so all my labs will be up to date.

My doc said he would sign it. We shall see. I plan on taking that AOPA course online after work and be flight eligible the next day. Let's see how well that works out.
 
I probably would be fine doing the 3rd class, but why should I?

I am already seeing my Doctor for monitoring purposes of a couple things. It's nothing that would rule me out of flying but still it has to be watched. Why pay an AME on top of it?
 
I just had another 3rd class medical this week. my AME said that some hospital groups and some medical societies are advising their physicians to not get involved with this due to liability.

You might be cutting it a little close. I'm waiting until the moment the form is released and then scheduling an appointment with my doctor. He also said he'd sign it. Luckily my SI medical expires May 31st so I have a little leeway.
 
I didn't really plan that apt on May 1st for Basic Med. I already had it scheduled anyway.

It really doesn't matter though, I will discuss it with him that day and drop it off when it is ready. He will look at it and probably have me come in for further consultation before he will sign it, which I will gladly do. I still have to make that first apt time.
 
My 3rd class costs $140 out of pocket, no insurance involvement. My AME told me that his malpractice insurance will increase $900 per year for Basic Med, even though he is already an AME. He thinks most GP's won't be interested in doing it. I'll probably stick with the 3rd class.

So far it seems basic med is more of a PITA than 3rd class. I'm just gonna go get my 3rd class again. Land, taxi to the docs hangar, 15 minutes later taxi back and go..

I couldn't tell you, I'm just repeating what was posted to the list by one of the moderators, in a reply to a member's query. The only reason I mentioned it at all is that what that particular moderator posts there is usually pretty accurate. In this case the claim was that the information was in an "e-mail newsletter" from AOPA. The only newsletter I get from them is the "Aviation e-Brief" and I've checked my copies back as far as April 7 and there is nothing in them that explicitly says this, but there may be another newsletter that I don't receive. There is an article on the AOPA site that mentions May 1 as the date "set by the FAA" for the rollout, but that might just be the date that 14 CFR Part 68 goes into effect, which of course we already knew.

If I get a chance I will write the CFO list and ask for a clarification. Unfortunately I've forgotten the email address to send to at the moment and don't have time to search for it, but will come back to this over the weekend.

What insurance? If you meant aircraft insurance then you are incorrect. If you meant physician malpractice insurance then I can tell you that myself and a number of other people around here have talked to our doctors about it and were told that it would be no problem.

Which insurance companies? I have information direct from USAIG that BasicMed will be a perfectly valid form of medical certification as far as my coverage goes. From what I've heard, every insurance company queried (I think it was by EAA) has said essentially the same thing.

I think the biggest roadblock will be doctors forbidden to do the exam by their large, lawsuit-conscious hospital-based clinics. But even that would only mean that you have to find someone else. Doctors in private practice or in small rural clinics will likely have no problem with it, and I know one locally who has already told me he would do it.
 
EAA insurance (Falcon) has said Basic Med is good to go. Talked to my Doc (small local) he has said no issue signs DOT physicals how is this any different?
 
Find a local clinic that does CDL medicals, mine was $65 last week.

Can you expand on what you "know." Every indication that I have from reading and talking to insurance brokers, points toward all of the carriers being on board with it. As I understand it, most policies require a valid medical and the feelings of the insurance companies is that Basicmed satisfies that requirement.

As someone that is 10 months from having the ability to even apply for a SI, this topic is extremely important to me. If what you know is contradictory to what I have read and heard, I would greatly appreciate you sharing so I can investigate. I have several trips planning in May/June and will need to make other arrangements if basicmed is not going to allow me to legally fly and be covered by insurance.

My 3rd class expires on 30 April and I intend to get a 3rd class before it expires.

Since very few have a completely clean medical history (the FAA wants to know everything), I see that it is up to your physician to look over your medical history and ability and advise if you have anything that would impair your flying abilities. There are a few items that are still prohibited...such as if your drivers license was ever restricted or pulled than you're probably not fit to fly.

Besides a few things, is it correct that now your flying fitness is between you and your doctor with BasicMed? Or is there an application here that the FAA can deny?

There is a form that both you and your doctor have to fill out but it does not go to the FAA unless requested, which would only happen if they're investigating you. Think of it like a flight review. You either get the sign-off or you don't. If you don't you could always go elsewhere to attempt to get the sign-off. The FAA doesn't hear about it either way and just expects you to not fly without a current sign-off. If you have an accident or incident, then they might start looking into whether or not your complying with the law, but until then it is essentially honor system.
 
also our very knowledgeable dr Bruce weighed in on this aspect in a old post/thread .I think you can take anything he says to the bank.

Post 18 says a doctor was quoted $900 from his insurance to cover BasicMed so apparently they are covering it.
 
My doctor has a little private practice and I'm probably the only pilot that goes there. I talked to him about it, showed him the checklist and declaration and he said no problem. I doubt he'll even check with his insurance. The AME's seem to be the only doctors making a big deal about the liability.

What did the largest carrier in the US say about doctors signing physicals for CDLs, high-school sports, scuba-diving lessons, return-to-work for forklift operators, bus drivers, etc.? I'm genuinely curious why this would be any different.

With a BasicMed exam, unlike a Class 3 exam, no denial is sent to the FAA.

You need no longer fear that one unfavorable exam will ruin your life.

This point was completely missed by the author of the Plane-n-Pilot story, when writing that Basic Med is not an improvement.
 
I asked our Dr if he did DOT physicals and he said no but another dr in the practice does. My third class is good for another year so I will just schedule a normal physical this year once it is out and ask him if it is something he would sign or not. If not then I will probably just go to the other Dr. For the physical since I don't really need a third class.
 
most/a lot of people are hard wired to think positive and interpret things as they would like them to turn out.i am not one of those people . this basic med thing is going to be a mess and we wont know it for many years, in my opinion . I have studied this subject from the very beginning and have read everything I can get my hands on. I did so because of my background in insurance, aviation, health, and total distrust of anything the faa touches. I will go back and compile the list of negatives and will start a new thread .
 
I'm still in wait-and-see mode.
