I decided to finally get some fly time in and make a quick hop, with my Bride, to the Baltimore Inner Harbor. KMTN looks to be our airport of choice, wx permitting of course. Airnav and AOPA comments sure do swing back and forth, anyone have info (transportation, FBO) to add?

I've landed at KMTN and have driven to the Inner Harbor from there. As I recall, it isn't particularly close, and I remember driving through some pretty interesting areas of Baltimore on the way. However, that may have been due to our poor navigation skills.

The FBO is run by the city, I think, and is pretty run down. I didn't think the service was that great either. I don't remember anything about the prices. I don't have any other suggestions though, since I am almost totally unfamiliar with the area.

The online comments seem to have the same tone, although the person I talked with today was helpful and quoted prices for ground transportation.

Here's my preference Gary, but it's not going to help you, my friend! Fun place to fly into, though, and you get a great view of Ft. McHenry! It's about a ten minute drive in their courtesy car...http://www.baltimoremarinecenter.com/heliport.cfm

Hmmmm...something to be said for those :heli: folks.

An alternate approach could be BWI, and then the light rail into downtown.

You weren't navigating badly -- Eastern Avenue is the most direct route to the Inner Harbor, and it does go through some areas where a nonresident might not feel comfortable. The better driving route from MTN is west on Eastern Avenue (US40) to the I-695 spur that leads to I-95, then I-95 south through the Fort McHenry Tunnel (stay right!) and the right-hand exit onto I-395 into the downtown by Camden Yards, then follow the signs to the Inner Harbor. Plenty of helpful signs to guide you along this route, which stays out of residential areas.

The FBO is run by the state, not the city, and they can arrange rental cars. The fuel at the self-serve pump over on the left as you're facing the terminal building from the transient line is significantly cheaper.

If you want public transportation, your only real choice is landing at BWI, and letting Signature Flight Support help you get to the rail station. Of course, fuel is dreadfully expensive at BWI, there's a $11 or so landing fee, and SFS lays on a bunch of parking and handling charges, some of which are waived if you buy something like 17 gallons of overpriced fuel.

If ya do drive into town, make sure you know where you are going. There are parts of the city that ya don't want to get lost in.......Engine territory.....and they do scalp.:hairraise:

Ron's got it right. Go towards the ball park and follow signs to the inner harbor.
