Balancing Moderation for a Thriving Community

Where can I talk with about politics with other pilots who I've largely met in person? And have it work?

FWIW, I have found through Facebook that some people I used to greatly respect seem to have only a very tenuous grasp on reality, so no, I don't think it'd work any more.

But you declaring it doesn’t work, when it clearly does just not on your terms, doesn’t mean it’s not working.

It became its own website.

IMO moderators should be active in the forum. Right now you have people on the MC that rarely participate.

That’s a problem.

nah, it's an opportunity to get certain people to stop posting so much... :)

I'm not aware of moderation issues, not sure if I've been an offender here.

I am recently banned from the bogleheads (financial)forum in a manner that I think was biased and unfair, but was consistently so over many years. I could either bite my tongue and continue, or just be myself and allow things to happen. Perhaps here I bite my tongue a bit, not sure about speaking out. I likely got close to the line with the pre solo no medical guy filling the airwaves with creative writing. Similarly I wanted to question the topic writer on switching to the fullest tank before landing, perhaps they ought not fly? If too many people agree with a thing, I like taking the other ironic side.

I think the heyday of forums is over and there are too many outlets for learning about things. How to build it up? Through cross pollination and harvesting discussions from there to here. FB. Twitter. Better content. Youtube tie-ins. Like why didn't the newly rated mod put a video up that tied back to here? Why not allow those with channels to talk them up here in return for the same on their channel? I have never seen a POA ad in any other media. What gets people here? Why not just consider POA a dead asset and rewrite the rules, break the old ones, make new ones? It is tough to know what participants here are non flying old farts versus legit resources, how to distinguish other than time or letting them brag?

I want to fly and be better as a pilot, as POA helps me do that I will participate. If I can help others a bit, I will.

There was a C172 forum that just up and vanished with no replacement. Why isn't there a make/model specific forum section here to serve as a repository of knowledge? It's all on FB now.

What distinguishes POA as a resource in the vast sea of resources for aviation? What is the reward for the mods to succeed? Where is there passion evident?

We live in a world where 50% of the people have just written off the other 50% in its entirety without being able to acknowledge any positive points. This likely permeates down to Internet forums also.

My general idea is too much moderation is a bad thing, and not enough moderation can lead to abuse of many by a few. I try to police myself and I am mostly successful. What I mostly to do is 1. Only follow topics that interest me. 2. Comment on topics only if I can stay on topic and contribute in a positive way. 3. Avoid personal attacks. That is about it.

I am sometimes passionate and have been called high strung. Sometimes that is true. That's when I take a break. Life can be an adventure, and sometimes it can be a drag. Balancing the two is part of life. That's how I look at this forum. I visit here often and I think it is one of the best places to be... mostly.

The closure of this thread: https://www.pilotsofamerica.com/community/threads/faking-a-safety-pilot.149510/page-2 is not unreasonable.

The closure of this thread https://www.pilotsofamerica.com/community/threads/how-screwed-am-i.149429/ demonstrates an unawareness that you either close a thread or you do not.....and then it's immediate reopening within eight hours, is an example of EVERYTHING that isn't right about the MC. Sorry, I said it.

IMO is should have remained closed. The MC can't control that the guy in question could well have a much more serious psychiatry diagnosis, but all the subsequent dumping on him was not warranted. Despite many hints, he (the O.P.) could not ask the correct question.

It's been this way ever since Chuck Haberle tried to run it like SBC.....(which is gone now. Hmmm I wonder why SBC is history). Moderating is tough but it's like the Chicago Bears.....grabbing defeat out of the jaws of victory now for the 5th time in a row. Back and forth and back and forth. Second guess, third guess.

(Just the opinion of User #5...and once, long ago, a moderator HERE!)

Edit added 17:30 CST: Thank you guys for re-closing it and removing the gratuitous abuse.

My airport doesn't have a super active flying community- POA pretty much is my aviation community so I'm in for the duration either way.
Same with my airport. When I hear about airports with pilots sitting around shooting the ... I get jealous. When I hear about bulletin boards to post or look for items to sell or buy, I get jealous.
When I look at the $5.80/gal SS Avgas and there is an airport 10 minutes flying time away with Avgas for $4.59 I get jealous.
And these days, (since my A&P his closed shop) when I hear about airports with a mechanic on site, I get jealous. And for this I pay $630/month for a hangar with one electric outlet, one fluorescent tube and a rodent/lizard/spider problem.

My airport charges $6.20/gallon, has multiple mechanics on the field who won't touch anything unless it's a flight school bird or burns Jet-A, there's no hangars available at any price for the foreseeable future, and I have to file a flight plan to go literally anywhere, and another one to come back.

But there is a pretty nice EAA chapter, so there's that!

Question for the MC:
Why was the thread "Whatever happened to Civility?" shut down? No comment. No explanation.
Is it thought police? Or abuse of power?

I’m not on the mc, but it seemed to me that the postings were moving into SZ material (don’t know if some posts were deleted)

There was a comment and an explanation for the lock. Specifically, "Locked for MC review." That means the MC is discussing whether or not some posts fall outside the rules of conduct. Sometimes we are slower than some would like, but we'll get there eventually. At the time of this posting (~1422Z 8 December 2024) no posts have been deleted by the MC and the thread remains visible, just locked for posting.

Nauga,
unhammered

Ok

OK. I will concede that "locked for MC review" is indeed a comment. But not much of one IMHO. It is my understanding that committees are inherently slow and their process sometimes takes time. I appreciate your added comment here and that none of the postings have been deleted. So I am requesting that when all is said and done the MC post a report on its action for this one thread action and any further actions related to it. We, as participants of POA, deserve to know why the MC does what it does and in so doing understand better what is acceptable and unacceptable on this site.

Jump on the bandwagon.
