Just got off the phone with my brother in Sedona Arazona. Some type of suposedly 10 seat Beechcraft crashed on approach to the Sedona airport today. Crash site was on the side of the mesa approximately 60 feet below the runway. Said to be 3 on board. Lots of smoke. Weather was discribed as partly cloudy but very windy.

Well so much for it having 10 seats. And apparently it was taking off not landing. My brother was in the airport restaurant when it happened and went down to the end of the runway with a local pilot/mechanic. Weird how details can get so messed up even by those on the scene. Might even find out that the news account is all wrong too.

My brother also mentioned that there was a "part of the propeller" on the runway over 100 yards from the crash scene. He thought it cartwheeled there from the crash site but if the plane was taking off maybe it came off before the plane crashed or when it hit the fence. Maybe it was a mirage. Who knows...

Wait for the NTSB

Man it stinks for those kids and their families.

A36, 3-up, 5100' runway, 4000-ish altitude, you gotta figure something broke, because there is way more than plenty of runway.

DA might have been quite high too though Spike, but presumably, not too high.

It takes a lot of DA to keep most planes on the ground, IME.

Either way, this is sad.

Very sad news!
I've flown in there(passenger with Warren McIlvoy on 11/03/05). It's a great little airport, especially looking down on the butte(is that what it's on?). It seems to me it's referred to as The Aircraft Carrier because a pilot has one chance to "get it right" because of the winds at approach elevation.
We ate at Sedona Airport Restaurant, definitely a worthy $100 Hamburger listing. However, when we were there the rumor was that it would be closing in the Spring of 2006. The business card I brought back has the same address and telephone # as this Link.

Hopefully, the people who served us were able to keep it open; nice group.
But "Good on Whomever" for apparently keeping it alive.

The other business card I have is SEDONA SKY TREKS.

Prayers to the families of the lost flyers.

EDIT: On second thought, http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Sedona+Airport+Restaurant?&btnG=Google+Search
the little location map indicated that the restaurant is somewhat removed from the airport. When we were there it was just off to the side of the runway.

WOW, that's awful. I've never landed there myself. Have been waiting for optimum conditions for my first trip there. Today would have never been in the running. On better days than today in Sedona the windsocks (on each end of the runway) often point toward each other. It was wicked windy in Phoenix today. I can only imagine what it was like up there.

I flew past there today around 2pm and the winds were from the south southeast gusting to 33kts. Not very fun landing there in that. :( Very sad for everyone involved.

Not sure if the chronicle link is the same accident. It looks like it is from the archives from 2003.

It does look like that, but I think it's the same accident. Notice that the last part of the filename contains "041607."

re: DA - we had a Bo belly off the end of our runway a few yrs ago. The part about the DA that contributed most was failure to lean the engine before departure.

I did a Google on the headline:

The Chronicle: Daily news: 04/16/2003 -- 07Plane Crash Kills 3 Students in Arizona State U. Flight-Training Program. Three students in Arizona State University-East's flight-training program were ...
chronicle.com/daily/2003/04/2003041607n.htm

It is odd that they are so close together in month and day. But most archivals use year month day then an id tag for the document.

Both accidents were tragic.

Weather was pretty crappy all over socal and AZ yesterday. I can only imagine Sedona was a handful yesterday.
