I purchased this book from Amazon for my IPad this weekend for $10.

I recommend it. I have operated our IFD540 for several years and still learned a few things. It has info in an easier to understand format than the IFD manual and has several graphics for visual awareness. Anyone using the Avidynne Navigators will benefit. There is also a hard copy available for $44.95. The kindle reader app for an IPad is free and saved me $35 plus I could enjoy the book this weekend.

I will probably be looking for other books to read over the next couple of weeks until the Covid 19 concerns decrease. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Have the same book. Well written. Step by step tutorial. Much better than the book that comes with the unit.

A question. What does it say is the most efficient way to create a user waypoint on the fly?

I've asked a few IFD users this and a related question (creating an ad hoc hold some distance from a waypoint in a database). I'm playing with putting together a video which compares the GNS, GTN, G1000 and IFD methodologies.

I have done that but it was 3 years ago. I will play with the IFD trainer tonight and try to remember what I did. Presume you want to store a location as you fly over it as opposed to entering the lat and long position with the keyboard?

No. Here's a scenario. You are 40 miles east of a VOR heading toward it. You get an instruction to hold 15nm east of the VOR on your present course, present altitude. And no, the IFD's flow to create an ad hoc hold does not take care of it unless you create the waypoint, and I'm looking for something more than just read the distance readout and use that as the fix.

Here is one way to establish a waypoint 15 miles East of an intersection:

1) press on the FMS button and scroll over to WPT
2) press the #2 LSK new key

This brings up a blank waypoint screen

3) again press the #2 LSK to convert the format from lat & long to fix, radial & distance
4) highlight the appropriate fields and enter the Fix, Radial and distance then press enter

5) Now to establish the hold at this waypoint again use the FMS screen and scroll left to FPL
6) Identify where you want to insert the hold in the sequence, see the inserted blue line
7) touch on this blue line - or- press the ENTR key
8) This brings up the criteria for a selection and press waypoint
9) enter the new waypoint identifier (WP001) and press enter, this will enter it into the flight plan
10) press on the new waypoint and select “ Hold at WP001”
This has established the hold at the newly defined waypoint.

Thanks. The way you described is the only way I know too. I've asked elsewhere with the same answer, so I guess it is the only one. Which makes it one of the very few things in which the flow of a GTN (shown in my video above) is arguably simpler than that if an IFD. That surprised me.

I think part of it is a difference in they way the two systems treat the creation of user waypoints. Back at least to the GNS, Garmin has let us create them on the fly by entering a name which does not appear in the database.

For you and others who expressed an interest, I've run into an issue, specifically with the G1000 (and especially since I am not flying right now). The problem is there are so many different versions of that software out here. The earliest versions had no ability to create an ad hoc hold. Later versions added that ability but unlike, the demo I linked for the GTN650, not at an automatically created Along Track (ATK) distance waypoint (it actually doesn't
treat it as a waypoint for anything other than VNAV). I have no idea if the latest G1000/Perspective versions (don't care about the Nxi at this point) added that as well, so I am concerned that, unlike the other units, anything I post about doing it in the G1000 isn't correct for someone.

Is someone who is flying a recent G1000 or Perspective firmware willing to take a look to see if they can create a hold at an ATK waypoint?

I finally put together a video comparing the GTN, GNS and IFD setting up a simple hold a distance from a waypoint. I decided to forego the G1000 because, as I mentioned earlier (and in the video), there are too many variations.

At this point it's published but not listed - that just means it doesn't show up i a search although the link works for anyone. I'd love comments on it, even if it's "this sucks!"
