Its always gut wrenching for me to see another airplane go down and people killed.
There was two fatality crashes yesterday that I'm aware of.
I think how many people died in Car Crashes yesterday vs people died in Aviation crashes yesterday.

With Aviation crashes we post in POA the details ages of victims, names, profession, families and sometimes Victim pictures. That is the gut wrenching part of it for me and not so much the cause.
The cause I can learn from but the victim details is the hard part to deal with.

God Bless to people that died yesterday in these crashes.

Years ago, ok decades I guess, we didn't have as much instant news on crashes. Usually had to wait on Flying magazine or similar to read about a crash and the analysis. Today it's like everything else, instantly on the internet before you almost can blink. We used to hangar talk about this stuff (still do) back then but now we have web boards (like POA) that 'allow' everyone to write an opinion. Nothing wrong with that either for the most part. Bottom line is this. What needs to be taken from the gut wrenching part is learn what and why it happened, learn from it, and become an even safer pilot.

If the victims' identities are hard to deal with, you can try to think of it in a different light (a little darker light, to be honest). I at least think of them as "regular people, just like you or me". That wakes me up even more and helps be stay vigilant and try to stay alive out there. We are survival species, we need to learn from the mistakes of others to stay alive.

For me, getting to know a little about the people makes it sink in more. I've read a few crash reports where the families were of similar ages to my family and those REALLY sink in.
With the Cirrus crash yesterday, I'm flying a near identical plane as the pilot and it really hit home and is sinking in as well. I was paying extremely close attention to my airspeed throughout the pattern on my flight today.

This one hit home for me big time. First off I'm in ND and the second is I flew back from Glencoe MN the day this happened with my 9 year old. I took off in kinda iffy conditions, awos said 22g35 in Glencoe an hour before I left but was in line with the runway so I made the decision to go. When I left it was a little less windy but still more than I would casually fly for fun.

Terrible thing that happened, the other passengers were his aunt and her son. Sucks all the way around.

I sincerely hope you pay attention to airspeed all the time when in a traffic pattern. I'm sure you do.

101+ People die in road crashes PER DAY

2.35 Million people are injured or disabled a year

I know the percentages tell a different tale, (GA vs Road Crashes) but it means very little if you are the one.

Lets enjoy our lives before the inevitable comes!

Way more cars on the road than planes in the sky. But I agree don't dwell enjoy life, we are all going to die at some point.

Biggest thing for me is years may go by without an accident in your area, but once one does occur, everyone starts to question the safety of small aircraft

I agree and I'll take it one step further. In aviation in general, we're exposed more than the average guy. Unless you have a corporation you register your plane under, someone can Google your N-Number and get your name and address immediately. It's a lot harder to do this with a license plate and some of the services that used to let you do this have been closed down. I mentioned this on a photography forum once and a guy who said he works for the FAA said he thinks it should be easy, so it deters us from doing stupid things!
