Me [squawking 1200]: Inbound 14 miles from South West for a full stop.
Tower: Left Base 30. Report 3 West
Some minutes later
Me: 3 out for Left Base 30.
Tower: You are not 3 out. You are 5 out. Continue Left Base 30.
Me: Long pause.....
Me: Left Base 30.
Really? Did you miss the VFR portion? fwiw - I noticed one other aircraft in the same Class D area in front of me clearly landing well prior to me. Nobody else appeared to be in the pattern or behind me.

I would think that if tower asked me to report then they might not have radar and therefore may not see my squawk.
