Asthma and Airliners

Will mild current asthma DQ someone from flying with Regional or Major airliners ? Albuterol inhaler is the only medication and used maybe once in a blue moon, nothing serious.

I would assume not but thought I would get some opinions. Any pilots out there who fly for airliners with asthma? Does anyone ever question your medication?

Thanks for the response. I tried searching approved medication and couldn’t find Albuterol, is it approved by the FAA?

No. I have asthma and hold a first class medical no problem.

One of my concerns as an asthmatic was the possibility of reduced lung function later in life. My AME (also happens to be a pulmonologist) said even a Special Issuance is not a problem and that there are many asthmatic pilots who hold a first class with FEV1/FVC numbers well below the 80% threshold (which would require SI I believe).

To add to that though...I will say they are picky about what asthma medication you take. It's a shame as there are some very good asthma medications out there (that have been out for many years) that the FAA hasn't approved or WILL approve, but only through special issuance after "30 day trial".

Thank you all for your comments. I am excited as I’m leaving the business world at 25 to chase after my dream of being an airline pilot. My bachelors and experience will be nice to fall back on if a furlough were to happen. My plan is to have commercial by 27 and apply for regional by 29. Paying for all of this training out of pocket with no loans.

Honestly Albuterol is all I need, mine is mainly exercised induced (running). Lifting weights will not even bother me. One of the biggest help was diet! (Veggies, fruits but no bananas, wild caught salmon, tuna, turkey, no cokes,no grains, no dairy) doesn’t sound like fun but I rather have my asthma under control.

My asthma was bad when I was a child though I had to visit the ER a few times. Will they dig that far and count that against me? At that time I was on Advair also.

I would assume 1st class medical is more about your current state.

Honestly Albuterol is all I need, mine is mainly exercised induced (running). Lifting weights will not even bother me. One of the biggest help was diet! Don't worry about it! Asthma is easy as far as the FAA is concerned. I too have asthma (though, it's illness induced and very, very well controlled without meds), and am planning on pursuing flying professionally, leaving engineering sometime in the next year or two. I'm 23 and @CC268 is planning on doing the same thing and is the same age so you're in good company here.

Don't worry about it! Asthma is easy as far as the FAA is concerned. I too have asthma (though, it's illness induced and very, very well controlled without meds), and am planning on pursuing flying professionally, leaving engineering sometime in the next year or two. I'm 23 and @CC268 is planning on doing the same thing and is the same age so you're in good company here.
