ASA FAR / AIM - App or ibook or eBook

Quick question for anyone that has purchased the ASA 2016 FAR/AIM. I have a few options. Of course you can't beat the paper version to rummage through but I am looking to pick up a digital version for reference.

I see that I can either go with Kindle version, iBook version or the App version. My question is has anyone had experience with the App version - did you like it or am I better to get the standard Kindle or eBook version?

I have the iThingy version (phone and pad) and really like it. Updates to the material happen automatically, search is very good, and the features under the "more" tab (like study by certificate) and very useful.

For the few times I use it, the updatable ASA app is pretty good, although like any other reprint, can lag behind actual changes to the FAR (the AIM is a bit less problematic in that regard).

Of course, you can download a likely more up to date version of the AIM from the FAA as a PDF for free. It's usable with iBooks or just about anything else that can read PDFs.

The FARs are a bit more involved as they don't come edited down to the subset that ASA thinks a private pilot needs to know but you can pluck them out here

Thanks guys. I grabbed the app. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't garbage. I didn't think it would be but .. I have seen crummy apps out there.

Good for grabbing the ASA app. They keep up with any changes and as Mike said above, the updates come though automatically.

I think it was like $10 when I bought it several years ago...one time purchase and you get the continued update support with the initial buy-in. Nice deal.

I'm not sure, does ForeFlight make it easy to download and update both FAR and AIM? If so, that would be an easy way, for a pilot who already uses ForeFlight.

ForeFlight's FAA document catalog includes the AIM and selected parts of the FAR. AFAIK, the AIM updates coincide with the FAA's update schedule; No idea when they update the FAR. But in both cases, you will get a download prompt when they do, just like with all the other charts and data.

But ForeFlight is already the biggest data user on my iPad and I wonder ow much of these extra non-essential features are just bloat that slows the rest of the app down, so I don't use it for that purpose.
