Headed down on Saturday. Doesn't look like they have a rental car company. Does anyone know of one that will deliver a car there? Any thoughts or tips?

I have landed at X51, but not lately. I notice 2 numbers in my Foreflight for Enterprise, the 5.8 mile away one is 305-245-5504. I believe that Enterprise advertises that they will pick you up. It would be worth a phone call to them.

According to Airnav they have Enterprise and Avis. I was just there a month or so ago and my buddy rented an Enterprise car on very short notice - no problem.

A bit sleepy looking but we found the service and the facility to be just fine. A very nice outdoor shaded observation area setup with food trucks - looks like it's in place for students.

All good, give them a call.

My favorite Mexican restaurant is Casa Tejas on Krome Ave, downtown Homestead. A bit spartan on the decor but I love the food.

Broke there for four days with a gear issue. Pretty boring area. Drove around what I think we're strawberry and tomatoe fields for endless hours.

I went there for access to Everglades National Park. We did a few days with a fishing guide and had a once in a lifetime fishing experience chasing giant laid up Tarpon. My buddy is a wildlife photographer and spent some time chasing shots of some Everglades birds and wildlife.

Homestead would seem to be a great way to do S. FL outdoorsey stuff while avoiding Miami's crush and $$$. Beats commuting thru South Beach at 3:00am in the morn... or maybe not.

I have ate there as well. Awsome! They let you bring in a cooler with beer wine etc.

There is an "El Toro Taco" pretty close to across the street from the restaurant I like. They get great reviews and let you bring a cooler. I have never seen coolers at the "Casita Tejas". I have eaten at the "El Toro Taco" and like it also.

What makes the area interesting for me is the Biscayne National Park. I go out fishing from Homestead Bayfront Park. If I had a gear problem and no boat I might not be as excited about the area. But like another poster said you can go to South Beach, or in the other direction you have the Florida Keys, which aren't that much of a drive from X51.

You were 30 minutes from South Beach, tops.

Hmmmm..

I was born and raised in Miami and lived about 2 miles from X51 for several years in the late 70's.....

Turnpike extension to Palmetto expressway to 836 to Mc Arthur Causeway to South beach is ALOT longer then 30 minutes....

Trust me..... I know...;););)

Maybe in a helo...

Also born and raised in Miami and thought that the 30 minutes was maybe an ambitious number, but with radar detectors and no traffic might not be too ambitious. A high school memory is riding in a car with a friend driving about 100mph on the Palmetto Expressway.

It's roughly an hour from Homestead Airport to South Beach at normal speeds with no traffic.

Another former Miami guy here. If you go there, gotta get some key lime pie......

Thanks everyone! I called the FBO he is going to have me a rental waiting from enterprise. I am very familiar with Homestead. I have never flown in though. South beach is 1 hour plus. Unless it's 4am.

Thanks for the report. Maybe I will try flying in there again. I am glad that Enterprise will help you with a rental car.

Started taking flying lessons in mid 80's in South Florida. Closest I been to dying in an airplane was at X51 around 1986 or so. Was tagging along with my CFI as he was giving a check ride to this guy on a twin Commander. We were doing T&G's at X51 when the student landed long and pulled back the throttles so he could taxi back for takeoff. My instructor thought better and pushed the throttles forward thinking we had enough runway remaining. It is a sickening feeling when you realize there is no way you will be airborne by the time you run out of runway AND there is no way you can stop either. When we reached the end of the paved runway the student pulled on the yoke in a futile attempt to get us flying. The CFI knew better and pushed forward on the yoke as we continued our takeoff on grass/dirt towards the airport fence. How we cleared that fence I'll never know and I have never been back to X51.

Great story! Somewhere around 1971 my buddy wanted to get some cool pictures of me flying so we took the Flying Club's 150 to X51 from Tamiami Airport and he got out and stood at the beginning of the runway with his camera. He got some great shots of me landing doing my touch and goes.

And I went for birthday train rides on an old train in that part of the world!

We flew down on Saturday and back on Sunday. On the climb out of BHAM my low voltage light came on! Did the check turning of electronics then the master etc. Couldn't find the problem so had to turn around and land. We were in my Skylane 182. with my IFR instructor, my wife and his girlfriend. We couldn't locate the Mechanic. I check to make sure the alternator belt was intact. And it was. My CFI called the owner of the flight school for options. He told him. "You guys take my twin camanche". So we were off. Anyway we landed on runway 10 which seems way shorter than the advertised 3000'. Had a car waiting on me. He said I'll park your plane and top it off. He said can I get you guys a water? I said Kidding, we would prefer a beer. He walks in the hanger and comes out with four cans of budlight. And off we go! 6.9 hrs round trip. Would have been shorter but had to dodge a few storms. Great flight though. And X51 was great. Very busy with planes in the pattern, Both Saturday and Sunday.
